Nike launches product designed to minimize risk of leaks while menstruating and being active

In an effort to eliminate periods as a factor dissuading women from participating in sports, while offering additional comfort both physically and mentally, Nike has released Leak Protection: Thin.

The product is an ultrathin, absorbent liner designed to protect against period leaks. Nike said it created and tested more than 30 prototypes before discovering the ideal combination of comfort and movement.

A two-layer laminate gusset and liner absorbs, wicks and holds blood with a membrane that acts as an anti-leakage barrier. It is designed to be worn with a tampon, pad or cup.

"Fear of bleed-through is real – and not just through the teen years, but through the entire journey of menstruation," Nike Apparel Innovation senior product manager Lisa Gibson said in a release. "Nike Leak Protection: Period is for people with periods across all life stages, designed to give them an added layer of confidence so they can feel secure during all forms of sport and movement. It's an innovation that we believe will change people's lives."

Earlier this month, the Orlando Pride of the National Women's Soccer League switched the color of the shorts for their secondary uniforms from white to black, making them the first team in the league to take that step.

Clubs in Europe had already started the trend. Wimbledon is also considering relaxing the rules on all-white clothing.

The Leak Protection: Period short will be available in early April at nike.com and at select specialty stores.
