TORONTO — William Nylander is used to the outside noise swirling around him in hockey's biggest market. And he knows some of the criticism is justified.Breathtakingly skilled, Nylander can make the absurd look easy one moment, and appear disinterested and disengaged the next. The Maple Leafs' enigmatic winger demonstrated what he's capable of Wednesday with two goals that couldn't have been more different.Nylander tied the game late in regulation on a chaotic scramble in tight before adding the winner on a graceful drive to the net at 1:06 into overtime as Toronto defeated the Calgary Flames 2-1."Nice to be able to score," he said. "Finally."It's certainly been an interesting week for the 24-year-old, who was recently called out on the front page of one of the city's daily newspapers before getting benched in the third period of his team's 5-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday."It's kind of always been around me," the soft-spoken Nylander said of the heat he takes in some circles. "I know I've underperformed and I know I can do better. I've got levels to get to where I want to be."Leafs forward Zach Hyman said he wishes people on the outside got to see the work his much-maligned teammate puts in away from the fans and cameras."You don't do the things he does away from the rink, and when people don't watch, if you don't care and you don't love the game and you don't want to get better, you don't want to help your team win," Hyman said. "He gets misunderstood a lot of the time. "Guys in the locker room know how much he cares."Michael Hutchinson stopped 21 shots for North Division-leading Toronto (15-4-2) in his second consecutive start in place of the injured Frederik Andersen, who remains out with a lower-body ailment. Auston Matthews added two assists as the Leafs ground out a result in a game that didn't have any scoring through 56 minutes.Andrew Mangiapane replied for Calgary (9-9-2), which had lost four of its last five in regulation before Monday's 3-0 victory at Scotiabank Arena in the opener of this two-game set. David Rittich made 37 saves in his second straight start in place of injured No. 1 goalie Jacob Markstrom (upper-body, day-to-day)."Lots of positive things (with) what we did in those two games," Rittich said. "That's a good thing." Nylander took a pass from Matthews in the extra period and beat the Flames goaltender upstairs after quick move to the forehand for his seventh of the season as the Leafs spilled over the boards to celebrate."Why is he misunderstood?" Toronto head coach Sheldon Keefe said of the No. 8 pick in the 2014 draft. "Willy has to own some of that. He's got to find more consistency in his game. He and I have talked a lot about those kinds of things. He's got to be engaged and good without the puck. "Part of it, perhaps, is being misunderstood, but part of it is he's still gotta grow as a player."Mangiapane finally snapped a 0-0 tie with 3:27 left in the third period when he took a pass from Matthew Tkachuk behind the net and beat Hutchinson for his seventh.Rittich, who made 34 saves for his first victory of the season Monday in Toronto, had made 70 straight stops against the Leafs, but Nylander jammed home his sixth with 1:28 remaining to force OT."We've learned a lot early in the season and the importance of sticking with it," Leafs captain John Tavares said. "Eventually with the type of depth that we have, our opportunities will come."Next up for the Flames is four in a row against the Ottawa Senators, including three straight in the nation's capital, starting Thursday. The Leafs, meanwhile, open a five-game road trip Saturday in Edmonton with the first of three against Oilers before two more versus the Vancouver Canucks.Apart from missing Andersen, Toronto was without first-line winger Joe Thornton (lower body) and top-4 defenceman Jake Muzzin (facial fracture) for the second consecutive game. Both players continue to be listed as day-to-day, while backup goalie Jack Campbell (leg) and forward Wayne Simmonds (wrist) remain on injured reserve.Hyman returned after taking a shot off the foot Saturday, slotting into Thornton's spot on the top line with Matthews and Mitch Marner to start the game. Hyman also spent some time with the Leafs' stars earlier in the schedule when Thornton missed 10 contests with a rib fracture.Toronto's power play, which remained tied for first in the NHL entering Wednesday despite going 0 for 7 in that shutout loss to Calgary, got a chance seven minutes into the third after a disjointed 0-for-3 performance in the first, but still couldn't get anything going with Matthews, Marner, Tavares and Nylander loaded up on the top unit.Rittich continued to shut the door, including a nice stop with Alexander Barabanov in alone with under five to go in the third before the teams traded late goals."He gave us a chance to win both hockey games," Flames head coach Geoff Ward said. "He played so well."Tavares had a great chance to open the scoring in the second off a pass from Matthews, but Rittich made a terrific right-pad save at full stretch.Toronto, which hadn't been shut out this season before Monday, got another opportunity on a 2-on-1 break shorthanded later in the period only to see the Calgary netminder rob the snake-bitten Ilya Mikheyev.Rittich then shut the five-hole on Matthews, who crashed into the end boards after a shove from Rasmus Andersson and subsequently had his right wrist taped by a trainer.Keefe said the injury was definitely bothering his No. 1 centre, but added it's something the NHL goal leader has been dealing with most of the season.Nylander and Matthews were actually the second pair of forwards over the boards in overtime — Keefe usually starts with Marner and Matthews — because the latter didn't feel like he could take the faceoff.Nylander took a subsequent draw alongside Matthews in the defensive zone on the next shift before securing the win with his deft touch."People get on him a lot," Hyman said. "He's an incredible player, and I think that people don't realize how much he cares and how much he wants to win. To see him be the hero ... it's just great. "Really happy for him."This report by The Canadian Press was first published Feb. 24, 2021.___Follow @JClipperton_CP on Twitter Joshua Clipperton, The Canadian Press
The 66-year-old businessman is one of the first group of 41 Korean travellers to arrive in Thailand under a 'golf quarantine' programme devised by the Thai government to boost its ailing tourism sector during the pandemic. At the Artitaya Country Club, the visitors were tested three days after arrival last week, and face at least two more tests before they can exit quarantine. With bars and other resort facilities closed, there's no prospect of a gathering for Heo and other visiting golf fans to thrash out the missed birdies, bogeys and shanks of the day, but spirits remain high.

(Andrew Vaughan/The Canadian Press - image credit) Canada's new top military commander Art McDonald has voluntarily stepped aside as he is investigated by the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service on unspecified misconduct charges. Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan posted a statement online at just after 11 p.m. Wednesday stating he was informed of the situation and takes allegations of misconduct seriously. "As I have stated, I take all allegations of misconduct seriously and continue to take strong action on any allegation of misconduct that is brought forward," wrote Sajjan in a statement. "No matter the rank, no matter the position." Sajjan did not reveal the details of the allegations and said he will not comment further because the investigation is ongoing. He has appointed Lieutenant-General Wayne Eyre to act in McDonald's place. Lt-Gen. Eyre is currently the commander of the Army. This latest development comes in the wake of the controversy surrounding the recently retired Chief of Defence Staff General Jonathan Vance, who is also under investigation by the military's National Investigation Service after allegations — first reported by Global News — that Vance had an inappropriate relationship with a female subordinate. McDonald appointed in December The investigation is looking into whether the former top military commander violated the code of service discipline or any laws were broken. McDonald was appointed to the role on Dec. 23, and he assumed command on Jan. 14, marking the official transfer of command of the Canadian Armed Forces from Vance to McDonald. McDonald apologized earlier this month after a public backlash erupted when he posted a photo online about the importance of diversity. However, the photo depicted eight white, male colleagues sitting around a conference table with one woman on a screen in the background. "It's true: the leadership of the CAF is, and historically has been, predominantly male and white. That needs to change," McDonald tweeted. "We need to reflect Canada's diversity at all levels. We must work to eliminate systemic racism & dismantle the barriers to career advancement that exist. We are there in mindset but know there is still a lot of work to do, and we are committed to doing it."
South Korean politicians won't be the first in line when the county kicks off its coronavirus vaccination drive on Friday, despite calls from the opposition party for the president to roll up his sleeve and take a shot to reassure vaccine sceptics. Leading political figures spent the week trading rhetorical shots over who should be the first to take a literal jab, but in the end, health authorities said widespread acceptance of vaccines in South Korea means they would stick to plans to vaccinate healthcare workers and other at-risk individuals first. On Thursday, the first doses of AstraZeneca's coronavirus vaccine were distributed to clinics in preparation for the initial inoculations.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell reiterated on Wednesday that the central bank wouldn't adjust policy until the economy is clearly improving, and will look through any near-term spike in inflation. "Powell made it very clear that the improvement in the economic outlook thus far will not instigate the Fed to tighten monetary policy," National Australia Bank foreign exchange strategist Rodrigo Catril wrote in a client note.

In its 30th anniversary year, SalMar is strengthening its substantial endeavours in the field of offshore fish farming, and through this way contribute to solving important environmental and area challenges the aquaculture industry faces. To strengthen the team at SalMar Ocean, Group CFO & COO Trine Sæther Romuld, in consultation with SalMar’s CEO and board of directors, has announced her decision to accept the role of CFO & Director of Strategy at SalMar Ocean, when a new Group CFO in SalMar is recruited to SalMar. The recruitment process for a new group CFO is already underway and the plan is for her to take up her new post on 1 September 2021. “SalMar’s focus on the open ocean marked the start of a new era in the seafood industry. Offshore fish farming opens vast new areas for sustainable food production and helps to secure world’s food supply in a long-term perspective. By strengthening the team in SalMar Ocean with the appointment of Trine Sæther Romuld, we are further reinforcing this important strategic effort for SalMar,” says the Group’s CEO Gustav Witzøe. “I am looking forward to, together with the rest of the team in SalMar Ocean, to further develop what is the start of a new industrial adventure for the seafood and the supply industry,” says Trine Sæther Romuld, CFO & COO at SalMar. SalMar’s focus on offshore fish farming is well known, and continues its tradition of developing and exploiting new technologies and new solutions. This endeavour is taking place under the SalMar’s wholly owned subsidiary SalMar Ocean, which is led by its CEO Olav Andreas Ervik. Good biological results from Ocean Farm 1 Ocean Farm 1 – full scale pilot with offshore design – was put into operation in the autumn of 2017. The unit has been in an exposed area of the ocean off the coast of Frøya in Central Norway. Two whole production cycles have been carried out and a combined total of 10,000 tonnes of superior quality salmon have already been delivered to the market. “We have been able to observe strong biological results, with strong growth, low mortality, low sea lice levels and a production costs on par with the best coastal locations,” says SalMar Ocean’s CEO Olav-Andreas Ervik. Experience from the construction and operation of Ocean Farm 1 has made it possible to develop even better and more cost-effective solutions as the company now prepares to build new units for use in exposed areas and in the open ocean. Fish farming in the open ocean The next technological leap for SalMar’s offshore development is Smart Fish Farm, which is planned to be established in the open ocean outside of Central Norway. SalMar has ambitions to build a series of these units for offshore production, based on the experience gained, provided that the authorities open up for locations and licenses in these areas. “In the open ocean, the Gulf Stream supplies a continuous flow of high-quality water at the right temperature. We have no need to add further energy or fresh water. And the Gulf Stream gets its power from the sun, wind and other deep ocean currents,” Ervik explains. He adds that with the technology and solutions that SalMar Ocean now makes available, the challenge posed by the Norwegian authorities to develop equipment suitable for solving important area and environmental challenges that the industry faces are taken seriously. Nothing is then more natural than using even more of the Norwegian coast and the areas on the Norwegian Continental shelf, in the salmon's natural habitat. Potential for significant ripple effects to the Norwegian supply industry SalMar has conducted studies that offshore aquaculture will have significant ripple effects in the form of value creation and jobs, on land as well. “We are ready to place major orders for sea cages and equipment when the necessary permits have been granted by the authorities,” says Ervik. Opportunities for international expansion SalMar’s focus on offshore fish farming will form the basis for a new era in aquaculture with significant effects also for the supplier industry. By being at the forefront with solutions and experience, suppliers can secure a competitive edge in a new and potentially vast national and international market. The technology and solutions currently being developed are not restricted to Norwegian waters. It is not only off the Norwegian coast that nature offers good conditions for the sustainable production of North Atlantic salmon For more information, please contact: CEO Gustav Witzøe, SalMarPhone: +47 911 47 834 Email: gustav.witzoe@salmar.no CFO & COO Trine Sæther Romuld, SalMarPhone: + 47 991 63 632 Email: trine.romuld@salmar.no CEO Olav Andreas Ervik, SalMar OceanPhone: + 47 918 68 100 Email: olav.andreas.ervik@salmar.no About SalMar SalMar is one of the world’s largest and most efficient producers of farmed salmon.
