Blues legend Chris Pronger celebrates jersey retirement by chugging beer

The St. Louis Blues honoured Hall of Fame defenceman Chris Pronger by retiring his jersey prior to Monday night’s game versus the Nashville Predators.

Pronger, who spent nine seasons with the Blues, was known throughout his entire 1,167-game career for having a boisterous personality. That was on display Monday, as the 47-year-old cracked open a Bud Light while on the ice giving a speech, and proceeded to chug it as his banner was being raised to the rafters.

The St. Louis crowd predictably ate it up.

Pronger's No. 44 is the eighth jersey in Blues history to be retired, as he joins Al MacInnis (2), Bob Gassoff (3), Bob Plager (5), Barclay Plager (8), Brian Sutter (11), Brett Hull (16), and Bernie Federko (24) as the only others to receive the honour.

Pronger ranks 15th on the Blues' all-time leaderboard in games played with 598, and third in points by a defenceman with 356. The best season of his career came as a member of the Blues in 1999-00, when he recorded 62 points in 79 games while being awarded both the Norris and Hart Trophy.

While his most productive years came in St. Louis, Pronger also spent time with the Hartford Whalers, Edmonton Oilers, Anaheim Ducks and Philadelphia Flyers. His career ended prematurely due to both concussion issues as well as an eye injury, but his legacy was already cemented long before his last game.

Not only did he finish his career with 157 goals and 541 points in 698 NHL games, but he was also able to win two Olympic gold medals with Team Canada (2002, 2010) as well as a Stanley Cup as a member of the Ducks in 2007. To no one’s surprise, he was voted into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 2015.
