The Next Integra Will Be a Five-Door Hatchback

Last month, Acura shocked the world when it revealed that it would be debuting a new Integra in 2022. Today, a second teaser photo shows the most important detail shared about the car yet: Like the original Integra introduced in 1986, the new Integra will be offered as a five-door hatchback.

While the Integra was a successful enough car as a five-door, the name became iconic on the back of coupe-like three-door hatchbacks that represented the most exciting Honda had to offer in sleek, compact packages. But sort of compact front-wheel drive coupe has disappeared from the marketplace in the decades since, so a more modern Acura is instead offering the car in its other traditional form as part of a design that might resemble four-door coupes with full-lift trunks from Audi and Porsche more than either a traditional sedan or a traditional hatchback.

The teaser photo only shows the five-door form, but the announcement does not necessarily rule out a three-door performance variant in the future. Acura only says that "the fifth-generation Integra will be a premium sport compact with a striking five-door design." That leaves some interpretation room for the sort of three-door shown in fireworks at the car's announcement, but not much.

Like the teaser of the front bumper shown earlier this year, this photo also shows actual Integra badging. It indicates that Integra is the official, final name of the car, meaning that the new five-door is the company's first car to abandon alphanumerics for a one-word name since the last Integra-branded car ended production in 2001.

The Integra won't be revealed in full for some time, but expect Acura to keep sharing tidbits of its biggest revival since the NSX over the next few months.
