Those Self-Lacing Nikes From 'Back to the Future Part II' Are on the Way

It is now 2015. And as any movie fan who has visited the local sneaker emporium recently knows, the self-lacing Nikes depicted in Back to the Future Part II are not yet available for purchase. (The movie’s hero Marty McFly time travels from 1985 to a fictional 2015 in the movie.)

The fact that we still have to bend over to tie our shoes is a real bummer and terrible condemnation on the state of American innovation, even if many of the projected inventions shown in the film (such as hands-free video games and fingerprint payment) are now a reality.

There’s good news on the horizon though, because legendary sneaker designer Tinker Hatfield (a great name for an inventor) told a trade show audience that the Nike MAG is in development and could be ready later this year.

Hatfield addressed a sold out audience at the Agenda Trade Show in Long Beach, California, and during his speech said that his team was hard at work on the power laces, according to the site NiceKicks.com.

Of course, in 2011, Nike put out a limited number of MAGs that did not include the power lacing feature, making them a very expensive (for charity!) and technology-free fashion statement.
