The Massive Star Wars Reference Hidden In Every Marvel Phase Two Movie

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has revealed that each of their Phase Two movies contains one unique reference to the ‘Star Wars’ franchise.

He revealed the shared reference in an interview with Cinemablend, which we should say contains a spoiler for 'Age of Ultron’ and possibly for this July’s 'Ant-Man’ as well.

In case you didn’t know, Marvel releases its movies in “Phases”. Phase One began with 2008′s ‘Iron Man’ and culminated in 2012′s ‘The Avengers’. Phase Two, which so far contains 'Iron Man 3’, 'Thor 2’, 'Captain America 2’, 'Guardians of the Galaxy’ and 'Avengers: Age of Ultron’, will end with this summer’s ‘Ant-Man’. Phase Three will kick off in 2016 with ‘Captain America 3′.

“Somebody gets their arm cut off in every Phase Two movie. Every single one,” he said, and obviously he’s correct.

In 'Iron Man 3’ Guy Pearce’s Aldrich Killian loses his arm, in 'The Dark World’ it’s Thor during a ploy to defeat Malekith, in 'The Winter Soldier’ Bucky’s lost arm becomes a bionic one, and in 'Guardians of the Galaxy’ Groot loses his in a fight with Gamora.

Here’s what happens in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron’.

So spoilers ahead…

In 'Age of Ultron’ this fate befalls Andy Serkis’s Ulysses Klaw. The person responsible for Klaw losing his arm isn’t a person at all, but Ultron - who loses his cool a bit.

Iron Man also loses an arm, albeit a robotic one, during his fight with Hulk while he’s wearing the Hulkbuster armour.

Marvel’s Phase Two of films doesn’t end with 'Avengers’ though, but 'Ant-Man’ out in the summer. So it seems likely we’ll see another amputation there, though it doesn’t necessarily have to be a main character and doesn’t have to be lasting  - as evidenced by Thor and Groot losing theirs.

“I’m obsessed with 'Star Wars’. Who’s not? I’m 40 years old. I’m in the movie business. So I’m obsessed with 'Star Wars’ – and it didn’t start out as intentional, but it became intentional,” continued Feige.

“It sort of happens in every 'Star Wars’ movie, but I was sort of looking at it, ‘Okay, is Phase Two our 'Empire Strikes Back’?’ Not really, but tonally things are a little different.”

'Avengers: Age of Ultron’ is out in UK cinemas today.
