Jonah Hill Bulks Up For New Movie Role

Jonah Hill’s size has always been inextricably linked to his work in Hollywood.

Pictures snapped of him this week on the set of new Todd ‘The Hangover’ Phillips comedy 'Arms and the Dudes’, in which he co-stars with Miles Teller, see him in bigger shape than ever.

He plays arms dealer Efraim Diveroli in the movie, based on the true story of two young friends who landed huge arms deals selling weapons to the US military in Afghanistan.

In real-life Diveroli is of average size, so it would appear his bulking up is not necessarily for realism, but then the 31-year-old he has always battled with his weight.

His earliest appearances on screen featured a larger, younger Hill in movies like his screen debut 'I Heart Huckabees’, and then in Judd Apatow’s 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin’ and 'Knocked Up’.

But it was in 'Superbad’ in 2007, in which he played hapless, cocky but well-meaning high school senior Seth, where his physique seemed to fit precisely with his character.

In an industry fearing change and favouring consistency – lest movie-goers turn their backs on unknown quantities – Hill and his size seemed to be a package.

In the movie 'Funny People’, he even jokes with Seth Rogen’s character, a comedy writer, that 'You shouldn’t have lost all that weight… There’s nothing funny about a physically fit man’.

However, following his role in 'Moneyball’ in 2011 with Brad Pitt, Hill slimmed down dramatically, losing 40lbs after switching to eating mostly Japanese food and seeing a nutritionist.

He said at the time: “It was just mostly diet. I wish there was some crazy thing that I did, like a pill or a genie or something.

“I went to see a nutritionist, and he told me what to eat to change my habits and stuff. I found that Japanese food was very helpful to me.”

“I just had a moment in my life where I said I wanted to become a man. And that means with my career, with my life, that means with my health,” he added, saying that he also thought the thinner Jonah Hill was taken 'more seriously’.

He’s also admitted that his gaining weight it could also be down to his love of beer.

“It’s so annoying because if I don’t drink beer, I get really, really thin,” he said. “Then when I drink beer, I get a little bigger.”

He also stayed in slimmer shape around '21 Jump Street’, 'The Wolf of Wall Street’ and '22 Jump Street’ too, but it appears that the weight has now come back.

‘Arms And The Dudes’ will be out later this year.
