The announcement comes as anticipation builds for the two-part Wicked film, with the first part set for release in November. Chu also has directed the 2021 film adaptation of the Broadway musical In the Heights.

The announcement was made today by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures (Mark Kaufman) and Kevin Kwan. The musical is described as a contemporary romantic comedy based on Kwan’s bestselling book trilogy and the Warner Bros. Pictures film directed by Chu, which made nearly $240 million worldwide.

The timeline for a pre-Broadway engagement will be announced shortly.

Book writer Winkler’s credits include her plays God Said This, Two Mile Hollow, Kentucky, Hot Asian Doctor Husband and The Brightest Thing in the World. TV credits include A24’s Peabody-winning Ramy, among others. She is a co-executive producer and writer on Elsbeth.

Park wrote music and lyrics for the Broadway musical KPOP, and Green wrote lyrics and music for Hands on a Hardbody, among other projects, and Tony is a Singaporean record producer and songwriter based in Los Angeles.
