‘The Gift’ Trailer: Joel Edgerton’s Directing Debut Might Make You Rethink Nostalgia

“This is good — I’m very happy.” Not for long, Simon. Bliss is fleeting in writer-director Joel Edgerton’s The Gift, which stars Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall as spouses who run into his old classmate (Edgerton). Turns out the guy is keeping a horrifying secret from those long-ago days that threatens to destroy the couple.

This is the first trailer for the pic for Blumhouse’s newly titled psychological thriller, which is unlikely to make you rush out to RSVP for the next high school reunion. Jason Blum produced it, hot off Best Picture Oscar nominee Whiplash and HBO’s Robert Durst mini The Jinx. Rebecca Yeldham is co-producer. It’s from Robert Simonds’ STX Entertainment, which launched a year ago with the goal of doing “studio-caliber” films in the $20M to $60M range. The Gift is among a number of films in the pipeline including Free State Of Jones starring defending Oscar champ Matthew McConaughey, and The Secret in Their Eyes with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts. This film, formerly known around Hollywood as Weirdo, opens wide July 31.
