Yahoo Movies ‘Focus’ Still Staring At $21M-23.6M Weekend – Friday Afternoon Box Office Update
UPDATE, 3:24 PM: Industry sources see Will Smith’s R-rated romance noir Focus doing between $7.5M-$8M tonight, putting the Warner Bros. film with a FSS between $21M-23.6M at 3,323 venues in the top spot. The Lazarus Effect
is showing $3.8M for today, inclusive of $344K Thursday previews, which would put the horror title on a course to do about $9M-10M. However, it may not see No. 2. That spot could go to Universal Focus’ Fifty Shades Of Grey. While some sources see FiftyShades doing as low as $9.4M in fourth, some think it could get as high as $12M, due to the fact that female crowds were stolen away by the Oscars last Sunday. Mr. Grey is looking at a third Friday of $3.65M per industry estimates at 3,383, down 272 engagements. Cume by end of Sunday should reach between $146.2-$148.8M. 20th Century Fox’s The Kingsman: Secret Service is looking at a Friday of $3.1M-$3.3M with a potential three-day of $10.5M-$11M per industry estimates. Total cume by end of its third sesh would range between $84.4M-$84.9M. Paramount’s TheSpongebobMovie is eyeing a Friday of $1.98M and a fifth place weekend rank of $8M in its fourth frame with a total cume just over $137M by Sunday.

Relativity/Blumhouse/Mosaic’s The Lazarus Effect grossed $350K last night in its previews which started at 8PM. The Mark Duplass-Olivia Wilde horror film about researchers who bring the dead back to life is opening in 2,666 venues tonight. It is estimated to pull in $12M-$14M.
Focus goes wide today at 3,323 theaters, 800 of which are in premium large format or IMAX. Weekend projections for the film are in the low $20Ms. In current industry tracking, Focus is showing strong positive interest among men under 25 and women over 25. Will Smith’s last non-action February release was the romantic comedy Hitch in 2005, which audiences graded with an A CinemaScore. Hitch bowed t0 $43.1M and ended its domestic run at $179.5M.
