‘Extended Family’ Canceled After One Season At NBC

Mike O’Malley’s Extended Family is no longer.

The comedy has been canceled by NBC after one season. It comes after the network handed third seasons to Night Court and Lopez vs. Lopez and gave Happy’s Place, the comedy starring Reba McEntire, a series order.

Extended Family follows Jim, played by Jon Cryer, and Julia, played by Abigail Spencer, who, after an amicable divorce, continue to raise their kids at the family home while taking turns on who gets to stay with them. Navigating the waters of divorce and child-sharing gets more complicated for Jim when the owner of his favorite sports teams (Donald Faison) enters the picture and wins Julia’s heart.

Its first season ended in March after 13 episodes.

Extended Family is produced by Lionsgate and Universal Television. O’Malley serves as showrunner and exec produces alongside Cryer, Tom Werner, Wyc Grousbeck, Emilia Fazzalari, George Geyer, Victor Levin, Victoria Morrow, and James Widdoes.

The show has had an interesting route to air. In May 2022, it scored a pilot order at NBC with Cryer in talks to star. Faison and Spencer signed up in June 2022 and the off-cycle project scored a series order in September 2022. It eventually premiered in December 2023 but its production was disrupted by the writers and actors strikes last year.

Six episodes had been completed before the strike with seven more produced after the strike ended – Extended Family was back in production four days after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Survivor’s Remorse creator O’Malley told Deadline earlier this year that he was “optimistic” about a second season.

“But I’ve been around long enough to know that 80 million things could happen between now and then,” he said. “I think our ratings have been good. Everyone in our business knows how hard it is to find stories, write stories, write episodes. The cast is unbelievable. We also have great kids. Everyone knows how hard it is to get a cast that feels like a family and is good at making sitcoms.”
