Eddie Redmayne Channels Transgender Pioneer Lili Elbe for New Film

Following his Oscar-winning turn as Stephen Hawking, Eddie Redmayne is bringing another real-life person’s story to the big screen.

In The Danish Girl, Redmayne will play Lili Elbe, a transgender pioneer and one of the first people to undergo sexual reassignment surgery.

Hitting theaters in 2016, the film is based on an award-winning book of the same name, which tells a fictionalized version of Elbe’s story. This is Redmayne’s first major role to follow The Theory of Everything (and will hopefully erase any memory of Jupiter Ascending).

The film, which has languished in production for years, was originally supposed to star a female actress -- Nicole Kidman and Marion Cotillard were among the names previously attached.

The Danish Girl co-stars Amber Heard and Swedish actress Alicia Vikander and is expected to debut in theaters sometime next year.

While it remains to be seen how Redmayne is in the new movie -- the picture is already a positive indication -- fans will just have to base it on his portrayal of Hawking, who was so pleased with the actor's performance he congratulated him on his Oscar win. Watch:
