Directors’ Fortnight Winners: ‘My Golden Days’, ‘Mustang’, ‘Serpent’ – Cannes

Following Critics’ Week last night, more prizes are beginning to roll out here at the Cannes Film Festival. Directors’ Fortnight is a non-competitive sidebar, but partners of the Société des Réalisateurs Français, the French directors’ group that organizes the event, do attribute honors. Tonight in the section, the SACD Prize, which is awarded by France’s equivalent of the Writers Guild, has been given to Trois Souvenirs De Ma Jeunesse (My Golden Days) by Arnaud Desplechin. This is a film that many had expected to see in the main Competition before it ended up in the Fortnight. Magnolia acquired U.S. rights during the festival. The story is an excruciating and glowing quest for time and lost loves starring Mathieu Amalric, Quentin Dolmaire and Lou Roy-Lecollinet.

Also recently acquired for U.S. distribution — this time by Cohen Media Group — Turkish-French helmer Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s Mustang nabbed the Label Europa Cinemas prize. Mustang will now receive the support of the Europa Cinemas Network, with additional promotion and incentives for exhibitors to extend the film’s run on screen. Sold internationally by Kinology, it’s a drama about sexual repression that sees five orphaned sisters held captive in their grandmother’s home.

The Fortnight’s Art Cinema Award went to Embrace Of The Serpent by Colombian helmer Ciro Guerra. Inspired by the journals of the first explorers of the Colombian Amazon, the epic story charts the first contact, encounter, approach, betrayal and, eventually, life-transcending friendship, between an Amazonian shaman and two scientists who, over the course of 40 years, travel through the Amazon in search of a sacred plant that can heal them. The short film Illy Award went to Rate Me! by Fyzal Boulifa with a special mention for The Exquisit Corpus by Peter Tscherkassky.

In other prizes today, the Cinéfondation and Short Films Jury headed by Oscar nominee Abderrahmane Sissako named its favorites from among 18 student shorts. The First Prize went to Share, directed by Pippa Bianco of AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women. Second Prize was given to Locas Perdidas by Ignacio Juricic Merillán of Chile’s Carrera de Cine y TV Universidad. A joint Third Prize was awarded to The Return Of Erkin by Maria Guskova of Russia’s High Courses for Scriptwriters and Film Directors; and Victor XX from ESCAC Spain’s Ian Garrido López. The films respectively receive a purse of 15,000 euros, 11,250 euros and 7,500 euros. The First Prize winner is also guaranteed that her debut feature film will be presented at the Cannes Film Festival.
