Deadpool Is Amazon’s Best-Selling Romance Film
The surprise superhero hit of the year, Fox’s ‘Deadpool’, has become Amazon’s top-selling romance movie.
Bizarrely, the Ryan Reynold’s-starring comic book movie is sitting at the top of the romance section on Amazon US, with its Blu-ray and DVD already out there it’s amusingly been placed into the romance genre category.
During the movie’s successful marketing campaign there was a particularly effective billboard poster that set the Merc with a Mouth film up as a romantic feature. To anyone unaware of what the Deadpool brand is could easily be fooled into thinking it was genuinely a rom-com fit for date night.
Despite the film being an R-rated, rather adult affair, it does actually have a romantic subplot to it - Wade Wilson is battling his urge to reconnect with his former lover Vanessa (played by Morena Baccarin) who he leaves after becoming unbearably disfigured (after transforming into Deadpool) at the hands of villain Ajax (Ed Skrein).
Fox released ‘Deadpool’ earlier this year, before the other comic book big-hitters like ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’, Captain America: Civil War’, and ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ arrived at cinemas, with monetary expectation for the film fairly low.
Not only was ‘Deadpool’ one of the lesser known characters from the world of Marvel, but the fact its R-rated explicit nature lead some to presume the film wouldn’t make much money at the box office. The doubters were promptly proven wrong when the $58 million budget production amassed a whopping $772 million worldwide.
With a sequel on the way and the possibility of even more Deadpool films after that (as well as a Weasel spin-off starring T.J. Miller), the franchise has begun in rather strong fashion.
‘Deadpool’ is out in the UK on 13 June, 2016.
