David Spade Remembers His 'Tommy Boy' Pal Chris Farley

Tuesday marked the 20th anniversary of Tommy Boy, the moronic and beloved road trip movie starring Saturday Night Live alums Chris Farley and David Spade. The 1995 movie earned harsh reviews upon release — the New York Times called it “the very poor cousin of a dopey Jim Carrey movie” — but it is now considered a comedy classic by ‘90s kids everywhere.

That audience is now all grown up, and looks back on the film with a tinge of regret: Farley died of a drug overdose just two years after its release, robbing the world of a brilliant talent and cutting short a remarkably promising career. Spade, who was one of Farley’s best friends and most frequent collaborators, honored the film and his friend with an emotional, profane Facebook post on Tuesday featuring the Tommy Boy poster (up top) that Farley signed for him two decades ago. “I was very lucky to be in this movie with one of the all time funniest motherf---ers, the late great Chris Farley,” Spade wrote. “It’s hard to read, but on the poster it says, “David lets stick together!” Signed by Chris. We gave each other autographed posters as a joke back then. Now, I see it in my office and skim over it because if I think about that for more than 5 seconds, I’ll start bawling. Like now. As Chris would say, ‘What a p---y.' #RIP”
