'Point Break' Remake Delivers Extreme Action in First Trailer

The first trailer for the upcoming Point Break remake is here on Yahoo Movies, jam-packed with the requisite surf, swindling, and skydiving. Like the intro states, "There are some who do not fear death."

>

Luke Bracey steps into the role of undercover FBI agent Johnny Utah — the part originated by Keanu Reeves. Bodhi, the outlaw leader first portrayed by the late Patrick Swayze, is now played by Édgar Ramírez.

>

The updated version has several callbacks to the 1991 movie directed by Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), including the trailer’s opening skydiving sequence. But there are also notable points of departure from the first film. For one, Bodhi has gotten more sophisticated than just knocking off banks and scaring the bejesus out of innocent bystanders. Now he’s a modern-day Robin Hood, taking from super-rich corporations and, at least in one case, giving to the poor.

>

But Bodhi and his band of adrenaline junkies aren’t completely altruistic. As Utah observes, “The people behind these robberies are extreme athletes using their skills to disrupt the international financial markets… and they don’t care who gets killed in the process.” Good thing for the feds that their undercover agent Utah just happens to be an extreme athlete!

>

Another difference: female gang member Samsara (Teresa Palmer) can ride monster waves. Her 1991 counterpart, played by Lori Petty, surfed, too. But taking on epic breaks like this is something else entirely — a feat only Bodhi dared do in the first film.

>

As in the original, the deeper undercover Utah gets, the more he bonds with Bodhi and his buds. And the more insane predicaments they find themselves in, including outracing rockslides.

>

In rapid succession, we see the gang engaged in yet more big-wave surfing and breakneck snowboarding; a romantic moment between Utah and Samsara; Ray Winstone as veteran agent Angelo Pappas (the role originally played by Gary Busey); and cliff-diving. Finally, Bodhi does a back dive off a waterfall as Utah falls after him. These guys (and their stunt doubles) are fearless.
