Newcastle vs Borussia Dortmund - LIVE!

Felix Nmecha dented Newcastle's Champions League charge as Borussia Dortmund kick-started their Group F campaign with a 1-0 victory on Tyneside. The Germany midfielder's 45th-minute strike clinched victory at a rain-soaked St James' Park on a night when three more points for Eddie Howe's men, who twice hit the crossbar late on, would have left them with one foot in the last-16.

They will now head into tough away games in Dortmund and against Paris St Germain next month with serious work to do to extend their stay in the competition. And they will possibly have to do it without midfielder Sandro Tonali, who was used as a second-half substitute amid speculation he could be handed a lengthy ban for alleged breaches of betting rules.

Memories of Newcastle's 4-1 demolition of Paris St Germain earlier this month faded as last season's Bundesliga runners-up produced an accomplished away display to remind them that the race for qualification from Group F has a long way to go.

FT: Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:56 , Matt Verri

Almiron fires over the bar from the edge of the area... and that will be that.

Dortmund hold on for a massive win, as Newcastle fall to a rare home defeat.

This Champions League group is wide open.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:55 , Matt Verri

90+4 mins: OFF THE BAR AGAIN!

Gordon's strike takes a huge deflection, loops over the goalkeeper and onto the underside of the bar.

Scrambled away.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:55 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Now or never.

Another Newcastle corner... up comes Pope!

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:52 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Another chance for Newcastle to put something into the middle, as Gordon is brought down by Hummels out wide.

Only four minutes added on...

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:51 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Newcastle running out of time.

There's been the occasional chance since half-time, but no real sustained pressure. Been fairly disappointing.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:48 , Matt Verri

86 mins: OFF THE BAR!

Free-kick clipped into the middle by Targett, Wilson flicks a header at goal and it bounces off the woodwork.

Goalkeeper didn't move.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:46 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Another Newcastle corner, another Newcastle corner that comes to nothing.

Magpies stay on the attack, Lascelles has a shot block. Willock's header is then charged down... handball? Fans think so. Referee thinks not.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:43 , Matt Verri

82 mins: Big opportunity for Dortmund on the counter, they make a mess of it though.

Wolf in behind, finds Reyna. He opts to try and lay it off to Haller, just behind the striker and he can't bundle his way through the challenges.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:41 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Triple change for Dortmund.

Nmecha, Fullkrug and Malen off, with Reyna, Haller and Sule introduced.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:38 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Ball over the top, Trippier looks to have bundled Adeyemi to the floor.

Referee charges over, whistle to his mouth... and then does nothing. Adeyemi unimpressed.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:35 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Nope, too close to Kobel and the goalkeeper claims.

Not happening for Trippier tonight - still time to change that.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:34 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Trippier has had a really poor night.

Guimaraes finds him in plenty of space on the right, bodies in the middle but Trippier's cross is over everyone.

He'll have another chance, Targett wins a corner.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:31 , Matt Verri

70 mins: That's absolutely gutting for Murphy.

He's going to have to come off. Willock coming on for him, his first appearance of the season.

Targett also on, replacing Burn.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:30 , Matt Verri

69 mins: Murphy has stayed down after landing awkwardly, he looks in a lot of pain.

It's his shoulder, or upper arm, that looks to be causing him trouble.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:29 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Newcastle convinced Hummels is offside, but the flag stays down for now.

He turns Burn in the box, fires the ball across the face of goal. Lovely flick from Tonali to clear the ball just a couple of yards from his own goal... and then the offside flag goes up.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:26 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Howe turns to his bench too.

Tonali on, for what is likely to be his final appearance before he receives a ban - reported to be ten months.

Murphy also on, as Joelinton and Longstaff make way.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:25 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Adeyemi on for Dortmund, replacing Reus. He'll be a real threat on the counter.

Newcastle seeing plenty of the ball now, visitors starting to sit a bit deeper.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:23 , Matt Verri

61 mins: Rain continues to pour down at St James' Park. Seems to be encouraging everyone to slide into the challenges, Guimaraes in particular can't help himself.

Joelinton hammers a ball into the middle, put behind for a corner with Wilson lurking.

Comes to nothing though, Burn penalised for a foul in the middle.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:20 , Matt Verri

58 mins: It's got the home fans going though, and Gordon whips them up some more after winning a corner.

Decent ball in from Trippier, Wolf there again to head clear though.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:18 , Matt Verri

Newcastle should be level out of nowhere.

Great move, ball played across to Wilson. Space to take a touch, six yards out... straight at the goalkeeper. Had to score.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:17 , Matt Verri

55 mins: All the noise coming from the Dortmund fans, all the football being played by the visitors.

Dare say this wasn't the plan when Eddie Howe gave his team talk at half-time...

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:13 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Reus from distance, not far away from troubling Pope. Flies high and wide of the far corner.

Newcastle haven't had a kick since half-time. Dortmund completely in control.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

21:10 , Matt Verri

48 mins: It's Dortmund on top since the break.

Visitors really confident on the ball, no sign that they have any desire to sit back and just hold onto their narrow lead.

Back underway!

21:06 , Matt Verri

Up and running for the second-half!

How Dortmund took the lead...

20:54 , Matt Verri

Ruthless from the visitors.

HT: Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

20:51 , Matt Verri

Dortmund absolutely furious as the half-time whistle goes with Wolf charging down the right wing.

He had a lot of space as he moved into the Newcastle half... mainly because all the Newcastle players had stopped.

Anyway, that is half-time. Dortmund in front thanks to that late goal.

Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund

20:49 , Matt Verri

45+2 mins: Halfway through the four minutes added on.

Almiron does well to get back and concede a corner, Dortmund pushing for a second here.

They'll have another corner, as Pope flicks the ball behind. Not hugely convincing.

GOAL! Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund | Felix Nmecha 45'

20:47 , Matt Verri

Dortmund take the lead!

St James' Park momentarily silenced. Gordon robbed in midfield, brilliant tackle and Dortmund are away.

Ball cut back to Nmecha, guides it first-time past Pope.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:43 , Matt Verri

42 mins: After two minutes of shuffling around, Can is now in fact coming off.

Ozcan will replace him at last.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:41 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Well then.

Ozcan was stripped off, about to come on... and Emre Lazarus Can has appeared from nowhere.

He jumps to his feet, shoves Ozcan out the way and drags himself back onto the pitch.

Not sure why, he still can't really move.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:40 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Can down for Dortmund, he's going to need some treatment.

Back on his feet, but he can barely talk. Two physios are basically carrying him.

No surprise that this will be the end of his night. Ozcan coming on to replace him.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:36 , Matt Verri

35 mins: First yellow card of the match, Wolf can have no complaints.

Almiron driving towards the box, chops inside and Wolf brings him down. Knew exactly what he was doing.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:35 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Longstaff makes the run in behind, pass from Trippier a bit too heavy though.

Mbappe has scored for PSG against Milan, that lifts them to top spot in the group and above Newcastle as it stands.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:31 , Matt Verri

30 mins: That was the plan, but Trippier's ball in doesn't beat the first man.

He's not quite been at it yet.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:30 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Gordon is causing a real threat out on the left, Wolf not enjoying himself up against him.

Trippier's cross deflected behind, Newcastle corner. Taken short, nothing really comes of it but they eventually win another one.

Imagine this one will be whipped straight in...

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:27 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Sublime football from Dortmund.

Newcastle carved open, ball comes to Malen at the back post and his first-time strike is blocked.

That's six shots for the visitors now. Only two for the hosts.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:26 , Matt Verri

25 mins: The pace has just eased off a bit, Newcastle able to knock the ball around and control things.

Trippier looks to whip a cross into the middle, gets it wrong for once and it's out for a goal-kick.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:24 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Very nearly.

Guimaraes dinks a lovely ball over the top, perfectly into the path of Almiron. He goes for the volley on the run, can only scuff the ball straight out of play.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:21 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Almiron launches himself to the ground in the box... referee not interested.

At the other end, it will be another corner for Dortmund. Burn slides in to block Malen's low cross into the middle.

Replays of that Almiron incident suggest he was 'looking for it', to put it mildly.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:20 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Dortmund enjoying a lot of success down their left, catching Trippier out of position on a regular basis.

Malen with yet another shot as Sabitzer finds him, deflected behind for a corner.

20:18 , Matt Verri

So, so good from Pope.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:16 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Brilliant effort from Malen, who whips a first-time strike at goal from distance. Flies just over the bar.

Isak unable to continue, so Wilson does indeed come on for the Magpies.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:14 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Almost immediately, Isak plays Gordon through on goal. Can can't stay with it.

Only the goalkeeper to be... can't do so. That was a massive chance.

Concern now for the hosts, Isak has gone down. Wilson getting ready.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:11 , Matt Verri

A stunning double save from Pope. Can wins the ball back off Longstaff and Dortmund can break.

Sabitzer charging free, cuts back to Malen and his initial shot is saved. The rebound comes straight back at Pope, shovelled away.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:08 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Gordon wins the first corner of the match, huge roar from the stands. Trippier over to take it.

Right on top of the goalkeeper, not much pressure on Kobel but he opts to push it out rather than attempting to claim it.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:05 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Frantic pace to the match.

Plenty of loose passes already, ball is flying off the wet surface. Nobody getting a chance to breathe on the ball.

Newcastle 0-0 Dortmund

20:03 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Big save!

Newcastle opened up with barely a minute on the clock. Brilliant ball from Wolf, Malen's first touch is a good one and he's in on goal.

Trippier closing in, Malen gets the shot away and Pope makes the save.

At the other end, Gordon cuts inside and curls the the striker towards the far corner... parried away.

Dortmund are in the building...

Longstaff: This seemed impossible

19:11 , Matt Verri

Sean Longstaff has admitted he didn't even dream of playing in the Champions League with Newcastle when the club were battling to avoid relegation just a couple of years ago.

“To think you’d be sitting in this position and doing a press conference before a Champions League game seemed nearly impossible, I would say," Longstaff said.

“I think now we’re just trying to enjoy the momentum and enjoy the good times, I would say.

"A lot of it has been a long time coming and probably something that we didn’t think would happen, so for us to be in this position now is a real privilege.

“To get to experience great nights in massive competitions is what every player wants and one we’re really grateful to be a part of.”

No Brandt for Dortmund

19:05 , Matt Verri

Dortmund are without Julian Brandt tonight.

The club have confirmed that the German picked up a muscle injury against Werder Bremen on Friday night and misses out as a result.

Can wants Dortmund to perform away from home

18:40 , Matt Verri

Like Newcastle, Borussia Dortmund will be relying on their home form to fuel a push to qualify for the knockout stages.

However, Emre Can wants Dortmund to prove they can deliver on the road too.

“It’s a chance to show what we can do," the midfielder said.

"Perhaps away from home in the past, we’ve not performed to our best – I’m not sure why that was last season – but obviously tonight gives us that chance to change things.

“In the Bundesliga, we have been doing well and we have confidence. We approach the game looking to win – and of course, we need the points.”

Special atmosphere in store

18:31 , Matt Verri

It's been 20 years without Champions League football for Newcastle - they are keen to make up for lost time at St James Park!

Terzic: Newcastle have been very smart

18:21 , Matt Verri

Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic has warned his side they will need to be at their best to beat Newcastle tonight.

"What they did last season is part of that, and the whole history and the investment, the money that’s come in... they’ve reacted perhaps differently and been very smart in the transfer market and built a team over 18 months," he said.

"And they’ve qualified for the Champions League through the Premier League, one of the toughest leagues.

“When you look at this group that we’re in, you can see the strength of it. They’re top of the group at the moment, but only three points ahead (of Dortmund), only two games are gone, so it’s really tight.

"We need to produce a very good performance so that we can earn a victory.”

More of the same?

18:12 , Matt Verri

First home match back in the Champions League... it went pretty well!

PSG had no answers for Newcastle earlier this month, as the Magpies stormed to a big win.

Dortmund will need to be much, much more prepared than PSG were for what faces them tonight.

Stage is set!

18:05 , Matt Verri

Going to be some night in Newcastle...

Standard Sport prediction

17:59 , Matt Verri

Beating Newcastle at St James’ Park looks like one of the biggest tests in European football right now.

Full of goals and backed by huge home support, Howe’s side will fancy their chances of making it another night to remember and taking charge of Group F.

Newcastle to win 3-1.

Dortmund team news

17:51 , Matt Verri

Julian Ryerson is set to miss the game through illness for the visitors.

Striker Youssoufa Moukoko is a doubt too, after picking up a thigh injury on international duty.

Newcastle team news

17:44 , Matt Verri

Newcastle United are again dealing with a number of injury worries.

Questions remain as to whether or not Sandro Tonali will feature against the German giants.

The midfielder is this week facing an investigation by Italian authorities in a betting scandal that could see him banned for as many as 12 months - although he is eligible to play tonight.

Eddie Howe has confirmed the Italian is available but it remains to be seen if he features.

Harvey Barnes and Sven Botman are certain to miss out.

Predicted Newcastle XI: Pope; Trippier, Lascelles, Schar, Burn; Longstaff, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Almiron, Isak, Gordon
