Newborns dressed in traditional Ukrainian shirts

STORY: The shirts were gifted on the eve of Vyshyvanka Day, which is celebrated on May 19.

Girls were presented with shirts with red patterns and boys with blue.

"Vyshyvanka is a good-luck charm," said volunteer Olena Besedovska. "One of happiness, good luck, and love."

The presents are a volunteer initiative from Lviv, where embroidered shirts were sewn and sent to Odesa, which is close to the frontline and where air-raid sirens sound several times a day.

The vyshyvanka is considered a symbol of national revival. It became popular again after Russia’s annexation of the Crimean peninsula in 2014.
