Newborn found abandoned on doorstep survived in frigid weather for 2 days, MA cops say

An abandoned newborn child was left outside in the cold weather for two days, Massachusetts police said.

The infant was found bundled in blankets in a car seat outside of a home in Springfield in the evening on Sunday, March 19, according to police.

“It is believed the baby was left at the doorstep (sometime) between Friday at 9 p.m. and Saturday morning at 12:30 a.m.,” Ryan Walsh, a spokesperson for the Springfield Police Department, told McClatchy News.

The residents returned from a weekend trip to Boston to find the cold and helpless child crying on their doorstep, according to WBZ.

“I looked at the baby’s eyes. All you could see was they were swollen from crying so much,” Juliannys Aviles told the outlet. “It was just so devastating. It just broke my heart into pieces.”

The weather that weekend ranged from below freezing to only about 50 degrees, according to AccuWeather.

The infant was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, police said.

“The newborn had significant medical issues when he was located, but thus far the recovery has been positive, although it will likely be a long road ahead,” Walsh said.

The family who found him intends to foster the newborn, according to WBZ.

“We saved his life he was meant for us...He was meant to be with us,” Aviles told the outlet.

Police say they are searching for the infant’s mother, who may also need medical attention.

The Safe Haven Act of Massachusetts, passed in 2004, permits parents to leave newborns at police stations, fire stations or hospitals up to a week after the child’s birth without facing repercussions, so long as there are no signs of abuse or neglect.

All 50 states have passed safe haven laws, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.
