New Spider-Man Will Be Inspired By Coming Of Age Films

Jon Watts is currently hard at work putting together the latest ‘Spider-Man’ reboot, which will this time fit snuggly into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

With John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein writing the new ‘Spider-Man’ film, Watts is now figuring out the tone and style of Peter Parker’s return.

And while Watts admitted that he has been watching every recent Marvel blockbuster to get to grips and steal some tips before working on such a huge production, he also revealed that he’s been looking at ‘Spider-Man’ in different “terms.”

Watts explained to IGN, “I’m thinking about it more as my favourite coming-of-age movies.” But what specifically has Watts been watching? Well, it turns out quite a few flicks.

“I love Cameron Crowe’s ‘Say Anything’ and ‘Almost Famous’, I think those are really great coming-of-age movies. ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ is a really great one,” he continued.

Watts wasn’t done though, as he added, “It’s been really fun to go back and revisit all those too and see what makes those movies really special. I also re-watched ‘Breaking Away’ and ‘Dead Poets’ Society’, which is such a moving one.”

Having cast 18-year-old Tom Holland as his Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Jon Watts has been slowly building his cast for his Spidey incarnation, with Marisa Tomei now on-board to play Aunt May.

Watts was hired to direct ‘Spider-Man’ in part thanks to his work directing the well-received ‘Clown’, but mainly for the punchy B-movie ‘Cop Car’, which was one of the most thrilling and gripping films of the year.

He is following on from ‘Jurassic World’s’ Colin Trevorrow, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’s’ Marc Webb, and ‘Fantastic Four’s’ Josh Trank as an inexperienced director being given the chance to oversee a huge, money-spinning blockbuster.

Trevorrow’s effort proved to be monumentally successful, Webb’s was distinctly mediocre, and Trank’s was such a catastrophic failure that his career is actually in trouble of being forever ruined because of it.

Fingers crossed Watts can prosper with ‘Spider-Man’ as it’s about time that the character got another stellar film that he fully deserves.

We’ll get our first taste of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ next summer, before Watts’ currently untitled ‘Spider-Man’ film is released on July 28, 2017.
