There's a New 'Pixels' Trailer and We Still Don't Know What to Make of It

It’s been two months since the first Pixels trailer dropped, which means that we’ve had two months to investigate, fact-check, hypothesize, ruminate, and soul-search about this project’s strange and inscrutable existence. In that time we have confirmed with absolute certainty that this is in fact a real movie.

Now there’s a second trailer, which you can watch above — and yep, it’s still about alien life forms that attack Earth in the form of '80s arcade-game characters, leaving it up to Adam Sandler, Kevin James, and Peter Dinklage to save humanity. The new preview hits mostly the same beats as the first, though unlike the earlier version, the second trailer does explain why the unlikely heroes are called into duty for humanity-saving. They were the top dogs at each of these games: Sandler the Pac-Man world champ, Josh Gad the Centipede master, and Dinklage the king of Donkey Kong.

It still leaves us with plenty of questions, though: Did the filmmakers pitch the movie as “Wreck-It Ralph meets King of Kong meets Independence Day?” Is Dinklage’s mullet inspired by Billy Mitchell? Are we tickled by all this nostalgic insanity, or horrified? Will this be the worst movie ever released, and actually, once and for all, “ruin our childhoods”? Or is it so boldly absurd and original that it might just prove genius?

I mean, Kevin James shoots a dancing Smurf in the face. How bad could it be?

Pixels opens July 24.
