New 'Force Awakens' First Look: Trailer for 'Disney Infinity' Video Game Offers Movie Hints

Over the past few weeks we’ve been bombarded by new footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens in domestic trailers, international teasers, TV spots, more TV spots, and even tie-in merchandise commercials. Now, let Yahoo Movies present the video-game version above

Here is your exclusive first look at the trailer for The Force Awakens add-on play set for Disney Infinity 3.0, a module that so closely hews to the film’s secretive storyline that it will not be available until Dec. 18, when the hugely anticipated sequel opens in wide release.

The minute-long game trailer echoes earlier teasers, but offers slightly different perspectives and even suggests some scenarios we haven’t seen yet. Here’s how it breaks down. [Warning: Possible mild spoilers follow.]

The clip begins with a clearer shot of Rey’s speeder zooming by the downed Star Destroyer on Jakku followed by a closeup of the young scavenger inside the scuttled ship (where you can clearly see the remains of a TIE fighter).

We meet Finn beside the smoldering wreckage of his Special Forces TIE after crash-landing on Jakku as a female voiceover intones: “We need help… and hope. Now more than ever.”

image

Cut to General Hux (we think) and Kylo Ren watching a starship dogfight from the the bridge of a Star Destroyer as the Vader fanboy dramatically clenches his fist.

image

We spot Poe Dameron racing past a fleet of Resistance X-wings preparing to go into battle against the TIEs.

Then we get some big hints about what seems to be at least one battle aboard a Star Destroyer. Finn blasts his way through a squadron of First Order stormtroopers, apparently heading toward a showdown with Kylo Ren and his cross-guard saber.

That sequence is quickly followed by what we believe to be a Finn-piloted TIE mowing down several others parked in a hangar bay.

The rest of the trailer contains a greatest-hits montage of Force Awakens moments featured in the live-action teasers. Hey, there’s BB-8 tooling around…

…the Millennium Falcon flying circles around some TIE fighters…

image

…Han and Chewie in a tight spot…

…and Kylo Ren preparing to go saber to saber with Finn. Unlike the previous clips, where we’re not sure if they actually engage, the game trailer shows sparks flying.

Typically, we wouldn’t want to read too much into a video-game version of a movie, but the Infinity set is billed as the only way to play the movie (Star Wars: Battlefront will be getting a Battle of Jakku module, but that will focus on the clash that takes place before the events of The Force Awakens), and the Infinity developers worked closely with Lucasfilm to create an accurate experience.

We did get some intelligence on the gameplay from a couple of well-placed sources: John Boyega (Finn) and Daisy Ridley (Rey), who also provided voices for the game. Both were downright giddy when their characters were unveiled at Disney’s D23 Expo in August.

image

“This is crazy. I have an actual action figure!” beamed Boyega, telling us that having a toy of himself was “awesome.” He also let us know that he got to play a beta version and that his laser rifle was — spoiler alert? — the most powerful weapon in the game. Ridley, whose Rey demonstrates some mad staff skills in the game trailer, was not impressed with her costar’s revelation. “I don’t need the most powerful weapon, because I’m a badass.”

Indeed.

The Rey and Finn figures come with the $35 play set, while figures of Kylo Ren and Poe Dameron will be available separately for $14 each. There will also be a package of Force Awakens-themed power discs ($10), which will allow players access to vehicles and accessories from the film.

The Force Awakens play set requires the Disney Infinity 3.0 starter pack, available now on all major gaming platforms.
