The Netherlands face the USA as the World Cup knockout stage begins in Qatar. The opening last-16 clash of the tournament sees the winners of Group A, the Netherlands, take on the runners-up of Group B, the USA, with a place in the quarter-finals up for grabs.

It’s been an unpredictable World Cup so far, perhaps the most ever following a chaotic group stage, and both of these teams will be looking to defy the odds and embark on a deep tournament run. Louis van Gaal’s Dutch side have faced criticism back home for the manner in which they finished ahead of Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar in Group A, with the goals of breakout star forward Cody Gakpo so far being their lone bright spark.

Christian Pulisic wasn’t born the last time the United States played Iran at a World Cup. But, 24 years on from ‘the mother of games’, he was the hero of the piece as his side gained a measure of revenge and a place in the last-16 in Qatar.

His winning goal, just before half-time of this 1-0 win at Thumama Stadium, gave the US the three points they needed to progress in second place from Group B alongside England, a third spot in the knockout rounds in as many tournaments.

He had come close against the Three Lions four days ago, hitting Jordan Pickford’s crossbar in a game the US could and should have won, but made no mistake when presented with the best opening in this one to score a first-ever World Cup goal.

The injury gained while firing home and that forced him off here will have a country sweating between now and a date with the Netherlands on Saturday, but that can wait for another day after a hard-earned and highly-charged victory that will be felt from Texas to Tehran.

“Why is it that you should not ask your government to take away its military fleet from the Persian Gulf?”, coach Gregg Berhalter was asked in his pre-match press conference. The question, about as far away from team news and tactics as you can get, succinctly set the scene ahead of this most political of contests in this or any sporting competition’s history.

Even at 71, Louis van Gaal has unfinished business. An epic career has entered extra time but even if it brings a crowning glory, Van Gaal could extend it further. Lose and Saturday’s match against the United States will be the final game of his third spell in charge of his native Netherlands. Win and he will have an added allure to suitors.

He has been touted as a possible successor to Roberto Martinez, who resigned as Belgium manager after their early exit. In typically direct fashion, Van Gaal flirted with the idea, citing his wins over the world’s second-ranked team in the Nations League and adding an idiosyncratic flavour to his answer.

“Belgium is a wonderful country with really friendly people and Knokke is a wonderful beach town,” Van Gaal said. “You have to convince my wife. No, I am joking, I am always at liberty to take decisions myself but there are certain countries I won’t move to and my wife Truus won’t move to.”

All of which felt typical Van Gaal. He may be the most eccentric and the most immodest manager at the World Cup. While others conceal their ambition, he advertises his. Holland have rarely performed like potential winners in the group stages but Van Gaal is bullish in his belief they can emerge triumphant.

“We want to become world champions and we have four matches ahead of us and then we will see what opportunities are ahead of us,” he said. “If we do become world champions, everyone is so opportunistic in this football world there will be offers and if I have to listen to the Dutch media, we will never be champions.”

USA head coach Berhalter has guided his squad through to the knockout stage after a 1-0 win against Iran in Group B followed draws against Wales and England.

Former Crystal Palace defender Berhalter, who spent six years as a player in the Netherlands with Zwolle, Sparta Rotterdam and Cambuur, said Dutch football had been hugely influential on his coaching career. The 49-year-old also laughed off the criticism Van Gaal has faced over his playing style.

Berhalter said: “I’m laughing because there’s always criticism in Holland. How many coaches are there in Holland, 16 million? Isn’t that what they say? I heard the same thing in 2014. Louis van Gaal has tough enough skin. He realises his job is to deliver wins and he’s been doing that.

“They’re undefeated in the group stage and I’m sure he’s focused on trying to guide his team to the final. He was very successful in 2014. He finds a way to win wherever he goes, so if I’m the Dutch public I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I’d just wait and see.”

Louis van Gaal not surprised by ‘excellent’ USA’s progress at World Cup

Netherlands head coach Louis van Gaal insists he has not been surprised by last-16 opponents USA’s progress at the World Cup.

Van Gaal, whose side take on the USA in the first round-of-16 match on Saturday after topping Group A, believes Gregg Berhalter’s side are one of the best-drilled teams at Qatar 2022.

He said: “It’s a process and perhaps the USA hadn’t expected that from this squad, but if you watch them play, it’s crystal clear they’ve had opportunities. I don’t think it’s a surprise to be quite frank.

“The USA has an excellent ‘team’. I would say one of the best ‘teams’, fine-tuned. It’s going to be a very tough match. But it’s nothing we can’t overcome. We also have a good team, that’s my view. We’ll have to wait and see in this match which of the two squads is the best.

“I’m not going to downplay the USA. On the contrary, they’re an example of what a good team is supposed to be. There are also teams who have progressed who are not a good ‘team’, but who have excellent individual qualities.”

Van Gaal laughed off suggestions he might be interested in the Belgium job after the tournament following Roberto Martinez’s announcement he would not be renewing his contract.

Christian Pulisic has been cleared to play against the Netherlands, despite suffering a pelvic injury while scoring against Iran. Pulisic was taken to hospital during the 1-0 win, and although his status has been “day-to-day” since, the US Soccer Federation said after Friday’s training session that the American had been given the go-ahead.

Jose Sargent is a doubt, however, due to an ankle injury. “With Christian we’re hopeful, I think with [Sargent] a little less so,” United States coach Gregg Berhalter said on Friday. “At this stage, it’s go time. If you can push through it, you do. So I’m sure he’ll have that mindset.”

The Netherlands have fewer concerns and could name an unchanged team from the side that beat Qatar, with Memphis Depay returning to full fitness. Nathan Ake is a yellow card away from suspension.
