Netflix Shared the First Photos of Dakota Johnson in Jane Austen's Persuasion

After news about Persuasion, Jane Austen's final novel getting the Netflix treatment hit the internet, fans of the beloved writer couldn't wait to see Dakota Johnson in character. Thankfully, Netflix shared a preview of Johnson along with co-stars Henry Golding and Cosmo Jarvis in costume and, sorry, Bridgerton fans, this isn't quite the over-the-top Technicolor fever dream type of period piece.

Johnson plays Anne Elliott, who is described as an unmarried woman on the "older" side at the age of 27 who reconnects with an old flame (Jarvis plays Elliott's lover, Captain Frederick Wentworth, and Golding is portraying her cousin, Mr. Elliot). Netflix's teaser photos show Johnson in a grey dress, semi-sheer jacket, and black choker. It's pretty somber, though there's no telling what Elliott has in store for the balls and other social events that feature in most of Austen's works.

"Let these exquisite photos of Dakota Johnson, Cosmo Jarvis, and Henry Golding tide you over until PERSUASION, a most excitable new film adaptation of Jane Austen's novel from director Carrie Cracknell, arrives on Netflix in 2022," Netflix shared alongside the photos.

"Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities," Netflix's official synopsis reads. "When Frederick Wentworth — the dashing one she once sent away — crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances."

According to Digital Spy, Cracknell and Netflix are hoping to give the movie "a modern, witty approach" while "remaining true to the novel."
