NCIS star Wilmer Valderrama has opened up about the show's "controversial" season 18 finale, after the drama was officially renewed for a 19th season.

Valderrama – who plays Special Agent Nick Torres – promised NCIS fans a "badass" final episode, amid uncertainty over Mark Harmon's future as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. As for Gibbs' fate, however, Wilmer won't be drawn.

Speaking about the upcoming finale, the actor told TVLine: "I mean, we're going to give people a lot to talk about. I'm not one to do the, 'You have to wait and see!' hype, but man, this episode is really unpredictable.

"I promise you that you're not going to see any of this coming."

When asked whether the season 18 finale will set up the outcome of Mark Harmon's involvement on the show, Wilmer insisted that he "can only speak for Torres".

"I don't play Gibbs, and it's not my journey to comment on," he offered. "But I will say that this episode is just badass, man. It's a really emotional, controversial type of episode."

Hinting at least some kind of resolution, he added: "There's some action, there are things going on that the fans have been dying to see, and there are some answers they've been seeking. People are going to get answers to many of the questions."

NCIS airs on CBS in the US and on FOX UK in the UK.
