Nampa police arrest man they say shot gun at officers, who did not return fire

The Nampa Police Department on Wednesday afternoon said officers arrested an 18-year-old man who fired a gun at them in a situation that led a pair of schools to be placed in what is called “hall check.”

According to a news release from the Nampa Police Department, officers went to serve a battery warrant on Jaden Andres Martinez near the 1900 block of 1st Street N. shortly after 1 p.m. Martinez allegedly shot one round at police and fled a residence.

The shot did not hit any officer, and Nampa police reported no injuries, the release said.

Carmen Boeger, the Nampa police spokesperson, said officers did not return fire.

Police set up a perimeter around a field and called the Nampa Police Tactical Response Team for assistance.

“TRT officers, along with Nampa Police K-9 officers, searched the area within the perimeter and located Martinez hiding in a ravine along the field,” the release said. “Martinez was taken into custody without further incident.”

Martinez is being held on the battery warrant and will have additional charges that will include the shot fired at a police officer, according to the release.

Before identifying Martinez, police announced on social media to be on the lookout for “an adult, 18 years old, light complexion, 6’, thin build, unknown shirt, possibly black, jeans.” They said he was “armed and dangerous.”

Police updated the information at 3:15 p.m. and revealed that at least two Nampa schools, Park Ridge Elementary and Endeavor Elementary, had been placed in hall check as a precaution. The schools are less than 2 miles away from where the suspect was being pursued.

“Anyone coming or going to the school will be restricted,” police said before arresting the suspect. “This is for safety reasons. ... Please be patient as we work to make sure you children are safe. There have been NO threats at the schools.”
