Muslim Community of Folsom helps families across Sacramento region celebrate Ramadan

The Islamic Circle of North America’s Sacramento chapter is offering assistance to families in need for Ramadan celebration.

Through a news release from the Muslim Community of Folsom, members of the mosque were asked to sponsor an ICNA Ramadan box for $50 to assist families in need.

Ramadan, which began Wednesday at sundown, involves fasting from pre-dawn to sunset for anywhere from 11 to 16 hours to give Muslims “the opportunity to gather control over their human needs,” according to Islamic Relief, a Muslim charity and nongovernmental organization founded in the United Kingdom.

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and considered one of the holiest months in the Muslim religion.

Ramadan prayers called taraweeh are held in most mosques after their night prayer, according to the nonprofit, Islamic Networks Group. During taraweeh, a prayer leader recites from the Quran with the goal of finishing it by the month’s end.

Each of the Islamic Circle’s Ramadan boxes include 10 pounds of rice, 10 pounds of flour, four pounds of sugar, two liters of oil, four pounds of chana dal, four pounds of garbanzo beans, four pounds of kidney beans, two pounds of Vital tea and two pounds of salt.
