How much are you spending on your commute? Use this RideKC calculator to find out
Gas is expensive, and it’s not getting any cheaper.
Kansas City’s area transit authority wants you to consider free public transit as an option for your commute. To show how much money someone could save by riding public transit, RideKC made a fuel savings calculator.
The calculator will tell you how much you’re spending on driving to and from work yearly.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
You just need to enter your information, such as:
Your car’s gas mileage
The price of gas per gallon
How many miles you drive in your round trip commute
The size of your car
How much it costs you to park daily
Your daily round trip commute using public transportation
The calculator will then tell you how much you could save if you used public transit to commute instead of driving every day.
RideKC’s calculator also states that you’ll save $6,624 annually if you can live with one less vehicle in your household. It takes into account the cost of insurance, license and registration, taxes, car depreciation and finance charges.
WHAT’S THE MATH?
RideKC uses calculations from AAA’s “2021 Your Driving Costs”, which detail how much ownership, maintenance and tire replacements cost. If you drive the following type of car, you’ll be spending this much per mile:
Small sedan: 15.67 cents
Medium sedan: 18.22
Subcompact SUV: 18.23 cents
Compact SUV: 17.79 cents
Medium SUV: 20.25 cents
If you want to give it a try, you can download the RideKC app on your phone and track when the bus will show up at your route next.
