The claim: Video shows Chuck Grassley give FBI director 'jailtime'

A June 23 Facebook video (direct link, archive link) shows Sen. Chuck Grassley speaking on the Senate floor.

"'WAIT AND SEE' Chuck Grassley puts Biden in PANIC MODE with J.AILTIME to Wray after 'Hunter' c.ase (sic)," reads the video's caption.

The video was shared more than 70 times in less than two weeks.

Our rating: False

The video is miscaptioned. It shows Grassley, an Iowa Republican, talking about letters he sent to the FBI. Neither President Joe Biden nor FBI Director Christopher Wray appear in the video. Grassley does not mention jail time for Wray, nor does he say, "Wait and see."

No mention of 'jailtime' for Wray in video

The video featured in the post shows a portion of a Nov. 30, 2022, Senate session.

In the clip, Grassley describes a series of letters he sent to the FBI requesting information about a number of topics, including former FBI agent Timothy Thibault and the president's son, Hunter Biden, who recently agreed to plead guilty to federal tax charges.

Grassley makes no mention of jail time for Wray, who does not appear in the video. Similarly, neither Grassley nor anyone else in the video says the phrase, "wait and see."

Fact check: Video shows 2022 Trump speech, not recent national address

USA TODAY has debunked numerous social media posts that pair congressional footage with misleading captions. Mike Caulfield, a research scientist at the University of Washington’s Center for an Informed Public, previously told USA TODAY this style of misinformation is called "false framing."

While the caption is obviously wrong if someone watches the entire video, “the majority of people scroll past these with the sound off," Caulfield said. “The fact it autoplays silently makes it engaging, without undermining the framing.”
