Starbucks said Friday it plans an unspecified number of layoffs as it restructures its corporate staff. In a letter to employees, Starbucks Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol said the Seattle coffee giant needs to ensure all work has a clear and accountable owner who can make decisions. “Our size and structure can slow us down, with too many layers, managers of small teams and roles focused primarily on coordinating work,” Niccol wrote.

Climate activists sprayed green paint over Amazon's base in Davos on Monday and disrupted helicopter landings at the start of the World Economic Forum's annual meeting. Swiss police swarmed to close down both protests as global business and political leaders descended on the mountain resort on the opening day of the meeting, where demonstrations over fossil fuels and climate change have become a regular feature. Demonstrators protesting over fossil fuel subsidies daubed orange symbols on the shop front where Amazon has set up a temporary base on the main street in Davos, as well as splattering green paint over the plate-glass windows.

South African police hunt gang leader of illegal mine where dozens died
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) -South African police are hunting a gang leader from Lesotho believed to have controlled operations at an illegal gold mine where 78 bodies were recovered last week after months of police siege. "Tiger" is believed to have surfaced from the deep mine in Stilfontein while it was under police surveillance and escaped with the help of officials, the South African Police Service said on Monday. "Extensive investigations and tracing operations are under way to find those officials who aided his escape between shaft 11 and the Stilfontein police holding cells," their statement said.

Southport attacker Axel Rudakubana pleads guilty to murdering three girls at dance class
A teenager has admitted murdering three young girls in a knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport in July last year. Axel Rudakubana, 18, from Lancashire, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on what was due to be the first day of his trial on Monday. Eight other children, aged between seven and 13, were injured in the mass stabbing at The Hart Space, along with yoga instructor Leanne Lucas and businessman John Hayes.

US upgrades probe into emergency braking issues in certain Honda vehicles

The problem affects the 2019-2022 models of the Honda Insight, a hybrid electric car, and the Honda Passport SUV, according to the U.S. auto safety regulator.
