NASA has unveiled the winners of its sixth annual Photographer of the Year awards. The spectacular collection features images that depict the agency's terrestrial operations all captured by its photographers in 2023. On Tuesday, April 16, twelve images were announced as winners in the categories of Documentation, Portrait, People, and Places. Notable images include a thrilling shot of NASA research pilot Nils Larson and photographer Jim Ross completing aerobatic manoeuvres in a jet and a snapshot of The Soyuz rocket launching at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The top awardees were Kenny Allen for Documentation, Josh Valcarcel for Portrait, Jim Ross for People, and Robert Markowitz for Places. Second-place recognitions went to Bill Ingalls for Documentation, Bill Stafford for Portrait, Keegan Barber for People, and Jef Janis for Places. Third-place awards were claimed by Michael DeMocker for Documentation, Jordan Salkin for Portrait, Jeff Janis for People, and Michael DeMocker for Places.

Four Aboriginal spears that were taken to England by Captain James Cook more than 250 years ago were returned Tuesday to Australia's Indigenous community at a ceremony in Cambridge University. The artifacts were all that remain of some 40 spears that Cook and botanist Joseph Banks took in April 1770, at the time of the first contact between Cook's crew and the Indigenous people of Kamay, or Botany Bay.

UPDATE 1-Ireland expects 2024 budget surplus of 2.8% of national income
Ireland is set to deliver a budget surplus this year of 8.6 billion euros, or 2.8% of national income, in line with forecasts and allowing most excess cash to be invested in a new wealth fund, the finance ministry said on Tuesday. The finance ministry estimated that inflation would average 2.1% this year following a sustained slowdown and that the domestic economy would expand by 1.9% in 2024 versus the 2.2% it forecast six months ago. Ireland is one of the few European economies taking in more revenue than the government spends each year and it ran budget surpluses of 3.2% and 2.9% of modified gross national income in the last two years, primarily due to a surge in corporate tax paid by its large hub of foreign multinationals.

Top 10 issuers dominate US active ETF marketplace, Morningstar says
Assets invested in actively managed U.S. exchange traded funds soared 15% to $611 billion in the first quarter, Morningstar said in a report published on Tuesday, but the vast majority of that money flowed into funds managed by a handful of issuers. A team of Morningstar analysts headed by Bryan Armour and Ryan Jackson described the market as "lopsided" and calculated the top 10 issuers of active ETFs controlled 74% of assets. The remaining 310 firms that also have rolled out actively managed ETFs have done so with comparatively "limited success," the analysts said.
