Company insolvencies in England and Wales drop 17% in March
Company insolvencies in England and Wales fell sharply in March and recorded their lowest calendar-quarter total since the third quarter of 2022, official figures showed on Friday. The Insolvency Service, a government agency, said 1,815 companies were declared insolvent in March on a seasonally adjusted basis, down from 2,177 in February and also 17% lower than in March 2023. Personal insolvencies in England and Wales were down 9% on the year in March and were 19% lower than in February at 8,708, the Insolvency Service said.

Fiona Beal: Teacher admits mid-trial to murdering boyfriend she buried in garden
Primary school teacher Fiona Beal accused of stabbing her partner to death “in cold blood” before burying his body in their garden has pleaded guilty to murder. Fiona Beal, 50, admitted killing 42-year-old Nicholas Billingham, whose partly mummified remains were discovered in their garden in March 2022, four-and-a-half months after he was last seen. Beal had initially pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter by reason of of a loss of control, but denied murdering Mr Billingham between October 30 and November 10 2021.

Exxon Mobil profit declines in 1st quarter as natural gas prices fall
Exxon Mobil's profit declined in its first quarter as natural gas prices fell and industry refining margins dropped. The energy company earned $8.22 billion, or $2.06 per share, for the three months ended March 31. The results didn't meet Wall Street expectations, but Exxon does not adjust its reported results based on one-time events such as assets sales.

Intel falls as weak PC chip demand hurts second-quarter forecast
The stock has fallen around 30% so far this year as Intel trails rival chip companies like Nvidia in producing advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chips and components. Intel forecast second-quarter revenue of $12.5 billion to $13.5 billion, compared with analysts' average estimate of $13.57 billion, according to LSEG data. Intel is planning a $100 billion spending spree across four U.S. states to build and expand factories.

Spanish authorities said they seized 25 tons of hashish hidden in a truck coming from Morocco and bound for France, marking the largest road seizure of the drug since 2015.According to Ministry of Interior, a Guardia Civil K9 unit flagged the truck as suspicious, leading to an inspection of the vehicle.“Inside the trailer, the agents found 22 wooden boxes inside which a large number of bales of hashish were hidden,” the ministry said.The ministry said this seizure was the largest via road transport since 2015. Russian central bank holds rates at 16%, raises inflation forecast
Russia's central bank held its key interest rate at 16% for the third meeting running on Friday, but raised its inflation forecast for 2024, acknowledging for the first time that it may struggle to reach its 4% target this year. The decision was in line with a Reuters poll of economists, which had forecast that the persistence of inflation, fanned by strong consumer demand and widespread labour shortages, would prevent the central bank from easing borrowing costs more quickly. The bank lifted its inflation forecast to 4.3-4.8% from 4-4.5% previously.
