Canada's main stock index hit a record high on Friday, boosted by healthcare stocks amid a broader rally, as the index was poised to end the week higher on renewed interest rate cut optimism. Two more tennis players banned over links to Belgian match-fixing syndicate
Two more low-ranking tennis players linked to a match-fixing syndicate in Belgium have been banned from the sport, the International Tennis Integrity Agency said Friday. Alejandro Crespo, a 34-year-old Bolivian, was banned for life and fined $250,000 for his “continuous pattern of corruption." Jorge Panta Herreros, a 28-year-old Peruvian, was suspended for three years and fined $10,000 after he was involved in fixing the result of two matches.

US consumer sentiment drops to 6-month low on inflation, unemployment fears
U.S. consumer sentiment fell sharply in May to the lowest level in six months as Americans cited stubbornly high inflation and interest rates, as well as fears that unemployment could rise. The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index, released Friday in a preliminary version, dropped to 67.4 this month from a final reading of 77.2 in April. Federal Reserve officials have underscored this month that they will likely keep their benchmark interest rate at a 23-year high for as long as needed to get inflation back to their 2% target.

The University of Michigan's preliminary reading on the overall index of consumer sentiment came in at 67.4 this month, compared to a final reading of 77.2 in April. "While consumers had been reserving judgment for the past few months, they now perceive negative developments on a number of dimensions," said Surveys of Consumers Director Joanne Hsu in a statement. "They expressed worries that inflation, unemployment and interest rates may all be moving in an unfavorable direction in the year ahead."
