Motorcycle rider killed in Lexington County crash, police say

A motorcycle rider was killed in a crash over the weekend, the Cayce Police Department said.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 8 p.m. Saturday, police said in a news release.

A vehicle was leaving the parking lot of the Three Fountains Skating Rink, at 2724 Emanuel Church Road, when it collided with a motorcycle driving west toward Old Barnwell Road, according to the release.

The motorcycle rider died, police said.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the motorcycle rider.

There was no word if the motorcycle rider was wearing a helmet.

Police said the driver of the vehicle that collided with the motorcycle was not hurt, and no other injures were reported. There was no word if the vehicle driver was wearing a seat belt.

The police department’s Accident Reconstruction Team believes speed was a factor in the crash, according to the release. Information about which vehicle, or if it was both, was speeding was not available.

In addition to police, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, West Columbia Police Department, and Lexington County Sheriff’s Department responded to the wreck.

The 2700 block of Emanuel Church Road was temporarily closed following the crash. That’s near the intersection with Platt Springs Road, in an area densely packed with restaurants and retail businesses.

Through Nov. 21, at least 942 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 39 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2022, DPS reported. Last year, 57 deaths were reported in the county, according to DPS data.
