Motion Picture Sound Editors Nominees Include ‘Dune,’ ‘A Quiet Place Part II,’ ‘The Matrix Resurrections’

The frontrunning “Dune,” “A Quiet Place Part Two,” “Nightmare Alley,” and “The Matrix Resurrections” each scored three nominations (feature dialogue/ADR, effects/foley, and music) at the 69th annual MPSE Golden Reel Awards (which will be held virtually on March 13). Additionally, “No Time to Die” earned two, with other nominations going to “Belfast,” “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” “In the Heights,” “Last Night in Soho,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “The Power of the Dog,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” “Tick Tick Boom,” and “West Side Story.” Those not shortlisted for the Oscar are “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” “In the Heights,” “Nightmare Alley,” and “The Tragedy of Macbeth.”

In terms of a sound Oscar predictor (with sound editing and mixing merged into a single category), the sonic power and complexity of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” is going to be hard to beat. Its great achievement is creating a grounded reality that is both innovative and believable. So, rather than relying on over-hyped sounds, supervising sound editors Mark Mangini (the Oscar-winning “Mad Max: Fury Road”) and Theo Green (the Oscar-nominated “Blade Runner 2049”) conveyed an otherworldly palette that is hallucinatory yet gritty, from supernatural voices that rattle the mind to colossal sandworms that shake the sand dunes of Arrakis.

For “A Quiet Place Part II,” Oscar-nominated supervising sound editors Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn expanded the alien creature sound design and created a larger vocabulary for John Krasinski’s horror sequel, in which the soundscape acts like a motor propelling the journey forward for the surviving Abbott family.

For “The Matrix Resurrections,” supervising sound editors Dane A. Davis (who won the Oscar for “The Matrix”) and Stephanie Flack cracked a new code that was heavier and more unwieldy. This was in keeping with the older and more mournful Neo. In addition, to accompany the fight sequences with the latest audio tools, they created more visceral and exaggerated body blows.

“No Time to Die” is the first Bond film to be mixed in Atmos, and director Cary Joji Fukunaga wanted sound editors Oliver Tarney and James Harrison to utilize the larger soundscape for Daniel Craig’s swan song. The Aston Martin DB5 opener in Matera is a great example. A salvo of high velocity rounds then thuds and cracks against the metal and glass of the car from every angle. They wanted this barrage to feel like a brutal 360° assault for the viewer.

Edgar Wright’s “Last Night in Soho,” which finds aspiring fashion designer Ellie (Thomasin McKenzie) transported back in time to ’60s Soho with horrifying results, became an “analog” homage overseen by Oscar-nominated supervising sound editor/re-recording mixer Julian Slater (“Baby Driver”). Which means his team bypassed modern sound design techniques in favor of methods from past years of horror sound tracks.

Animation nominees went to Disney’s “Encanto” and “Raya and the Last Dragon,” Pixar’s “Luca,” Netflix/Sony’s “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” and Universal/Illumination’s “Sing 2.”

Documentary feature nominees included “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry,” “Flee,” “The Rescue,” “Summer of Soul,” “VAL,” and “The Velvet Underground.”

Among the Foreign language nominees were “Cliff Walkers,” “The Hand of God,” “A Hero,” “Titane,” and “A Writer’s Odyssey.”

Non-Theatrical documentary nominations went to “1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything”: “Episode 1,” “The Beatles Get Back”: “Part 3,” “Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed,” “Exterminate All the Brutes,” “Formula 1: Drive to Survive”: “Down to the Wire,” “Life in Colour with David Attenborough”: “Seeing in Color,” “McCartney 3, 2, 1,” “Welcome to Earth.”

Among the TV nominees were Lucasfilm’s “The Book of Boba Fett,” Marvel’s “Loki,” and “WandaVision,” “For All Mankind,” “Foundation,””Lost in Space,” “Mare of Easttown,””The Handmaid’s Tale,” “The Nevers,” “The Underground Railroad,” “The White Lotus,” “Squid Game,” “Star Trek Discovery “Succession,” “Ted Lasso.”

As previously announced, Ron Howard will receive the Filmmaker Award and Chic Ciccolini (“Apollo 13”) is the Career Achievement recipient.
