Most outstanding restaurant? Washington spot is finalist for famed James Beard award

A contemporary American restaurant in Washington snagged a spot as a James Beard award finalist for most outstanding restaurant.

The prestigious James Beard Awards “recognizes exceptional talent and achievement in the culinary arts, hospitality, media, and broader food system,” according to the James Beard Foundation.

These awards recognize restaurants and chefs across the country over multiple categories — and they are like the “Oscars” of the culinary world.

Finalists for the awards were released March 29, and Copine, an upscale restaurant in Seattle, was recognized among four other nominees for “Outstanding Restaurant.”

Copine serves New American dishes with a “classical French technique.”

In French, copine translates to “friend” or “girlfriend” depending on the context.

This restaurant serves a prix fixe menu (fixed menu) of three courses, with a new menu from Chef Shaun McCrain each week.

Other honored categories include: outstanding chef, best new restaurant, outstanding restaurateur, emerging chef, outstanding bakery, outstanding pastry chef or baker and outstanding hospitality, among more.

Also recognized in Seattle were Yenvy and Quynh Pham, who were nominated in the outstanding restaurateur category. They operate Phở Bắc Sup Shop, Phởcific Standard Time, The Boat in the city.

Winners for each category will be announced June 5 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Outstanding restaurant finalists:

  • Copine Seattle

  • Coracora — West Hartford, Connecticut

  • Friday Saturday Sunday — Philadelphia

  • Lucia — Dallas

  • Mita’s — Cincinnati
