This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield has found out the surprising news that he and his mum inadvertently inspired Bradley Walsh and his son Barney Walsh's TV series Bradley & Barney Walsh: Breaking Dad.

The show, which sees actor and comedian Bradley taken on an adventure-packed trip by his son Barney and challenged to take on a range of terrifying tasks, will premiere its third series on ITV tonight (January 4).

Appearing on This Morning today to give a preview of the new series, which took the father and son duo on a trip across Europe, Bradley dropped the surprise revelation that the show might not have become a reality if it wasn't for Phil's input.

"Phil, do you know how this started?" Bradley said. "We were all at a party in Portugal and you showed us a video of your mum wing-walking. Dan (Baldwin, Holly Willoughby's husband) said, 'Brad, would you do that?' and Dan said to Barney, 'Could you get your dad to do this stuff?' And that's how it started."

Phil was shocked to learn the real reason behind the show's creation and he took the opportunity to make a cheeky joke, suggesting that he could be due commission for the series and joking that it is "my format".

After two series set in the US, the father and son duo have switched location to Europe for their third run, and Barney revealed that the continent gave them a fantastic opportunity to experience different cultures.

"We did two trips to America and we loved America and going to different states – it is like a microcosm of the world," he said. "But we really wanted to go and do something different and Europe was great because we could do a different country each episode and see different cultures. We went to places you wouldn't usually, like Slovenia."

The new series will see the pair take on a range of thrilling challenges, including doing an extreme pole vault over a lake and traversing an enormous outdoor climbing wall. And Bradley admitted that heading up the climbing wall was one of the most difficult things he has ever done.

"I never used to realise that heights was my thing," he said. "All of a sudden, since we started doing this gig, heights have become a real problem for me. That climbing wall... it's just mad.

"It takes a professional climber 15 minutes and it took me 45 and I had to keep stopping and I couldn't look around. You forget you've got a rope attached – it's really scary."

Considering that Bradley took on the Daleks in his final episode of Doctor Who on New Year's Day, that climbing wall really must have been a challenge.

This Morning airs on weekdays at 10am on ITV. Bradley & Barney Walsh: Breaking Dad returns today (January 4) at 8pm on ITV.
