Quarantine hotel plans expected to be approved

Boris Johnson is expected to approve plans to force some travellers arriving to the UK to quarantine in hotels to limit the spread of new coronavirus variants.

The Prime Minister will discuss proposals for arrivals to quarantine in designated hotels to ensure they follow self-isolation rules with senior ministers on Tuesday.

Various options are said to be on the table, but Whitehall sources suggested that ministers may opt for a more limited system after aviation leaders warned that introducing tougher border rules would be “catastrophic” for the industry.

The officials said a less sweeping option would apply only to British residents returning from countries with more contagious strains – such as Brazil, South Africa and Portugal.

EU threatens export controls on covid vaccines amid supply row

The European Union has threatened to impose tight controls on the export of covid vaccines made in the bloc, potentially impacting the UK’s supply of Pfizer jabs.

The UK Government said it was in “close contact” with suppliers after the European Commission issued the warning amid a row with AstraZeneca over a shortfall of doses for member states.

European health commissioner Stella Kyriakides accused pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, which worked with Oxford University on the vaccine’s development, of failing to give a valid explanation for failing to deliver doses to the bloc.

Third night of curfew riots in Netherlands

Riot police in the Netherlands clashed with protesters defying a curfew for a third night in a row.

More than 150 people were arrested, according to local reports.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte has condemned what he called "criminal violence".

Police fired warning shots and tear gas in Rotterdam after an emergency order issued by the mayor failed to move demonstrators.

Unrest started at the weekend as demonstrators pushed back against new covid restrictions.

Mother says she heard gunshots that killed her son

The mother of a 15-year-old boy who was murdered in broad daylight has appealed for help to track down his killers.

Sharmaine Lincoln described how she heard the gunshots that claimed her son's life, as she labelled his murder “every parent’s worst nightmare”.

Keon died at Birmingham Children’s Hospital last Thursday after suffering gunshot and stab wounds when he was set upon by a gang of youths in Linwood Road, Handsworth.

Trump impeachment trial moves closer as House delivers charge to Senate

The impeachment charge against former US president Donald Trump has been delivered to the Senate ahead of the historic trial.

The nine House prosecutors carried the sole impeachment charge of “incitement of insurrection” across the Capitol on Monday.

They made a ceremonial march to the Senate along the same halls the rioters ransacked just weeks ago.

But Republican denunciations of Mr Trump have cooled since the January 6 riot.
