UK has worst daily Covid death rate in the world, Oxford research shows

Britain currently has the worst daily coronavirus death rate in the world, data shows.

The figures, collated by an Oxford University research platform, showed an average of 935 daily deaths over the last week was the equivalent of more than 16 people in every million dying each day with Covid.

The research platform Our World in Data shows no other country currently has a higher death rate per capita.

The UK overtook the Czech Republic, which had the highest death rate since January 11 at 16.3, after publishing its latest death figures on Sunday night.

Pandemic has taken ‘devastating toll’ on young people’s mental wellbeing

The coronavirus crisis has taken a “devastating toll” on young people’s mental wellbeing, with the unemployed more likely to feel anxious and depressed, a new study suggests.

Research by The Prince’s Trust suggested the experience of young people not in education employment or training is more negative than those in work and training.

The youth charity said its survey of 2,180 people aged 16 to 25 across the UK indicated that that more young people are feeling anxious than in the 12-year history of the study.

It comes after an investigation by the Evening Standard revealed half a million children now need support who had no diagnosed mental health problem before the pandemic.

‘Major incident’ declared as Storm Christoph barrels towards UK

A major incident has been declared in South Yorkshire as Storm Christoph is set to bring widespread flooding, gales and snow to parts of the UK.

Forecasters have issued an amber weather warning for today and tomorrow for central northern England.

The warning says there is a “danger to life” due to fast-flowing or deep floodwater and a “good chance some communities cut off by flooded roads”.

Up to 70mm is expected to fall in areas around Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield, particularly in the northern Peak District and in parts of the southern Pennines, 200mm could be possible.

Trump ‘to lift Covid travel bans on UK, Europe and Brazil’

Donald Trump is reportedly set to lift coronavirus travel bans on most non-US citizens arriving from the UK, Europe and Brazil.

They are set to end under a new proclamation from the president, who is due to leave office on Wednesday.

The restrictions being rescinded have barred nearly all non-U.S. citizens who within the last 14 days have been in Brazil, the UK, Ireland and much of Europe.

Most have been in place since mid-March when Mr Trump signed proclamations imposing them, while the Brazilian entry ban was imposed in May.

Elderly woman ‘so lucky’ after swan crashes through bathroom window

A swan smashed through an elderly woman’s double-glazed window just moments after she left the room.

The RSPCA said the bird needed dozens of stitches after it flew into the bathroom window of the woman’s chalet home in Shamrock Lodge, Barton in Fabis, Nottinghamshire, at around 8am on Monday.

She heard a loud crash, found her bathroom window shattered and the wounded bird on the floor.

The female swan ended up cut and dazed after the incident and was taken to a nearby vet’s where she spent more than an hour in surgery.
