Mom of missing Navy sailor says she’s checking Illinois dumpsters for 21-year-old son

A 21-year-old Navy sailor has been missing for days after a night out at an Illinois bar, officials say.

Séamus Gray, who is assigned to Naval Station Great Lakes, was reported missing after not returning to his base, the City of Waukegan said in a news release Thursday, March 23.

He was last seen leaving a bar on Genesee Street in Waukegan at 1:40 a.m. Saturday, March 18, city officials said. Waukegan is about 55 miles north of Chicago.

The manager of IBIZA, the bar where Gray was last seen, said Gray got into two fights outside the bar after he was escorted out of the building “for being too intoxicated,” WMAQ reported.

“It’s just a sad situation for us,” the manager, Adrian Hernandez, told WMAQ. “We just want him to be found... we just want to cooperate in any way we can. We’re doing everything we can to cooperate with the police investigation with the family.”

Officers and firefighters have searched the area and nearby lakefront for Gray, city officials said.

Gray’s mother, Kerry Rodier Gray, said in a Facebook post she searched dumpsters Wednesday for her son.

“Tomorrow I have to to do what no mother should ever have to do. I have to go on a foot search with the police department, fire department and many others who will join in to find my son Séamus Gray’s body,” she said Wednesday.

Gray is a native of Jupiter, Florida, according to WPEC. He is 6 feet, 3 inches, 170 pounds and has brown hair and blue eyes.

His mother called it “the most horrific time” of her life.

“Séamus lived for the Navy, was proud, was the the top honor recipient,” she said. “Was leaving soon for the greatest moment in his life. Séamus loves his country, and his family more than anything.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Waukegan Police Department at 847-360-9001.
