HOUSTON, November 30, 2021--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The MolinaCares Accord ("MolinaCares"), in collaboration with Molina Healthcare of Texas, today announced its partnership with Family Scholar House, an organization that uses education and social support as tools to end cycles of poverty. Through a $150,000 MolinaCares grant, Family Scholar House will launch pre-residential services for the Houston community, including education success coaching, health care, food assistance, and childcare resources.
"Organizations like Family Scholar House are always welcome in Houston as we work together to make tomorrow brighter for every resident of our city," said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. "This organization has been absolutely transformative in Louisville, and I look forward to working with Family Scholar House, MolinaCares, and all partners involved in this important project to replicate this success, with the goal of ensuring that every family has the support necessary to thrive in Houston."
The program will enroll an initial 130 participants in Houston, providing wraparound services as well as peer and community support. Programs will be available to single and foster parents, along with their children, as well as at-risk low-income students.
"I wholeheartedly welcome Family Scholar House to the Third Ward and am excited about the opportunities and assistance this experienced, committed organization will provide to those in need in our city," said Councilmember Carolyn Evans-Shabazz. "I stand ready to support Family Scholar House of Houston as we work in tandem to build a stronger community with thriving families."
The Houston campus, Manson Place for Parent Scholars, is expected to be completed in 2024 and will be home to approximately 75 families. It will be the first Family Scholar House outside the nonprofit’s headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky.
"Family Scholar House strives to make a tangible and long-term difference in the lives of families, and we are thrilled to bring that mission to Houston with the help of MolinaCares," said Cathe Dykstra, chief possibility officer, president, and CEO of Family Scholar House. "We know our programs and the Manson Place for Parent Scholars residential campus will be able to touch the lives of so many families and lift up the larger Houston community. We look forward to collaborating with the many changemakers in Houston as we work toward a better future for the next generation."
"MolinaCares’ goal is to improve the well-being of people across Texas, whether that is through physical care or community support," said Chris Coffey, plan president of Molina Healthcare of Texas. "Our partnership with Family Scholar House is an extension of this effort as we address health disparities through whole-person care."
