A decommissioned Pacific Northern Gas (PNG) line was accidentally hit at the new 3rd Avenue RCMP detachment site Oct. 30 in Prince Rupert.
According to PNG, the leak was a minor one and had been cleared up within an hour after they were first notified at 2:11 p.m.
Prince Rupert RCMP said BC Hydro and the Prince Rupert Fire Department attended the scene, while nearby businesses were temporarily evacuated due to the potentially dangerous situation.
The city, which owns the site, confirmed the leak was to an inactive service line, not a main line. They also said all protocols were properly followed by site workers, who immediately shut down the site after the break occurred.
Coast Tsimshian Northern Contractors Alliance Limited Partnership, which is contracted to work on the new detachment just outside of the courthouse, declined to comment on the leak.
Meghan Brooke, owner of the nearby Sugar-Free Cafe, confirmed she was briefly forced to leave her business because of the leak.
