A changing of the guard could be coming, as ‘Minions’s’ monumental box office success over the last few months has paved the way for it to topple ‘Frozen’s’ record haul.
Currently, ‘Frozen’ holds the record box office haul for an animated film with $1.27 billion. But, ‘Minions’ now stands on $1.08 billion, and continues to bring more and more money in.
Last weekend, via Entertainment Weekly, ‘Minions’ opened to $20.1 million in China to earn the biggest opening day haul ever in the country for an animated film.
Because of this amount it’s now the second highest grossing animated film ever, as it sauntered past ‘Toy Story 3’, and it has its sights on reaching the top of this list.
But what are the chances that it will actually reach ‘Frozen’s’ total? Well, it needs to amass another $200 million before it is stricken from cinemas, and while that might seem like a lot it could actually happen.
Animated films continue to steadily bring in money even months after release as parents take their children back to see the film they adored so much.
In fact, according to Box Office Mojo, ’Minions’ is still in 1500 theatres in the United States, while it took in $1.5 million last weekend alone. Which is pretty impressive considering it was now released over three months ago.
Having only just been released in China it could easily add an extra $100 million in that territory, while it still is yet to hit cinemas in the great country of Greece too, which it will finally do on 24 September, 2015.
In all honesty, ‘Minions’ will have to hoof and poof it is to actually beat Frozen’s box office total. But, either way, it has amassed quite an impressive sum already, so the powers that be at Universal will be more than pleased with its success.
