Serbia's prime minister resigns as anti-corruption protests grow
Serbia’s populist Prime Minister Milos Vucevic resigned Tuesday in an attempt to calm political tensions roiled by weeks of massive anti-corruption protests over the deadly collapse of a concrete canopy. The canopy collapse in November, which killed 15 people in the northern city of Novi Sad, has become a flashpoint reflecting wider discontent with the increasingly autocratic rule of Serbia’s populist President Aleksandar Vucic. He has faced accusations of curbing democratic freedoms in Serbia despite formally seeking European Union membership for the troubled Balkan nation. “It is my appeal for everyone to calm down the passions and return to dialogue,” Vucevic told a news conference announcing his resignation.

DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng puts focus on Chinese innovation

Liang had kept an extremely low profile until Jan. 20, when he was one of nine individuals asked to give a speech at a closed-door symposium hosted by China's Premier Li Qiang. But the fact Liang was invited to share his opinions on Chinese government policy highlights Beijing's recognition of DeepSeek's role in potentially upending the global AI order, in China's favour.

Mozambique president discussed LNG, hydro projects with TotalEnergies' CEO
CAPE TOWN/PARIS (Reuters) -Mozambique's President Daniel Chapo met with Patrick Pouyanne, the chief executive of TotalEnergies, on Monday to discuss several of the company's projects in the southern African country, including a long-delayed $20 billion liquefied natural gas development. Mozambique LNG, which had been slated to restart construction by the end of 2024 and begin producing gas in 2029, saw that deadline slip when the French oil major last week confirmed that force majeure had yet to be lifted on the project. "During the conversation, Pouyanne reaffirmed TotalEnergies' commitment to resuming the project, currently suspended since 2021, due to security challenges in the region," Chapo said in a post on X on Monday.
