MONTREAL — Metro Inc. reported its second-quarter profit fell compared with a year ago as its sales edged higher. The food and drugstore retailer says it earned $187.1 million or 83 cents per diluted for the 12-week period ended March 16. The result was down from a profit $218.8 million or 93 cents per diluted share a year earlier. Sales in the quarter totalled $4.66 billion, up from $4.55 billion in the same quarter last year. Tech giant Cisco Systems on Wednesday joined Microsoft and IBM in signing onto a Vatican-sponsored pledge to ensure artificial intelligence is developed and used ethically and to benefit the common good. Cisco Systems chief executive Chuck Robbins signed the document, known as the Rome Call, and met privately with Pope Francis, the Vatican said. The document was unveiled and signed at a Vatican conference on Feb. 28, 2020 — just before Italy locked down as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic — by Microsoft’s Brad Smith and IBM’s John Kelly III. Universities, U.N. agencies, private corporations and nongovernmental organizations have signed on as well.

The European Parliament gave its consent on Wednesday for the EU to exit the energy charter treaty, an international agreement protecting energy investments, over concerns that it undermines efforts to fight climate change. The 1998 Energy Charter Treaty allows energy companies to sue governments over policies that damage their investments. The European Parliament voted on Wednesday for a new law that will require larger companies operating in the bloc to check if their supply chains use forced labour or cause environmental damage and act to take action if they do. The directive places new requirements on companies to fully audit "upstream" partners in design or manufacture, and "downstream" partners who transport, store and distribute products. Business groups have complained that it introduces multiple new layers of regulatory burden, with potentially harsh sanctions, places European companies at a disadvantage compared to competitors and discourages investment in Europe.
