Migrants Cling to Cliff Face as Boats Sink in Stormy Seas Off Greece

Two migrant boats sank in separate incidents off the Greek islands of Kythira and Lesbos on the night of October 5, leaving at least 21 dead. Video from Kythira shows the dramatic rescue scene as survivors clung onto a cliff as waves crashed about.

Kathimerini said at least 21 deaths had been confirmed by October 6, but there were fears that figure would rise, given the number of missing.

Coast guard spokesman Nikos Kokkalas said at least 80 people were rescued by the early hours of October 6 in Kythira, where winds reached about 70 km/h (45 mph). Credit: Hellenic Coast Guard via Storyful
