Midlands man checking his mail killed in crash, SC coroner says

A Midlands man checking his mail was killed when he was hit by a pickup truck, South Carolina officials said.

Mark Small, Sr., is the pedestrian who died, Fairfield County Coroner Chris Hill said Monday. The 72-year-old Winnsboro resident died at the scene, according to Hill.

The crash happened at about 6 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Smallstown Road and Swallow Lane, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s about a mile from Richard Winn Academy.

After checking his mailbox, Small was walking across Smallstown Road when he was hit by a 2017 GMC pickup truck heading north, officials said.

The truck driver stopped at the scene, according to Hill.

Both the driver and a passenger in the pickup truck wore seat belts and were not hurt, Miller said.

No other injuries were reported.

Sunset was recorded at 5:16 p.m. Friday, according to the Sunrise Sunset website.

Hill said the accident remains under investigation by the coroner’s office and Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 1,020 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2021, including 154 pedestrians, state Department of Public Safety data shows.

At least nine people have been killed in Fairfield County crashes in 2021, and this was the first involving a pedestrian, DPS reported.
