Middle schoolers posed as seducing ‘hookers’ in teacher’s game, Texas school says

The leader of a Texas middle school has addressed a September incident in which a teacher asked students to pose as seducing “hookers” during a classroom game.

The game of “Bear, Hunter, Hooker” was played with seventh-grade students at KIPP Poder Academy, the San Antonio college preparatory school said in a letter to families.

Laura Maria Gruber, a parent of a former student at the school, calls the game a “sexualized” version of Rock, Paper, Scissors. In a video shared on TikTok, Gruber said the classroom activity “normalized prostitution.”

“If the hunter and the hooker are played at the same time, the hooker seduces the hunter while he points a gun at her,” Gruber told KSAT.

Within a week of the game being played, Gruber pulled her daughter from the school, KSAT reported.

She said she spoke with four levels of administrators about the matter, but it was not publicly addressed until a February letter to parents by KIPP Poder Academy school leader Stephanie Lee.

Lee acknowledged the game was played and said “it was not appropriate for students.”

“Any activities with actions or words like ‘hooker’ or ‘seduce’ should never have a place in our schools,” Lee said. “While the intent was never to sexualize a child, I recognize that the impact may have caused students to feel uncomfortable or traumatized.”

The school leader admits the academy “stumbled,” and she apologized for not communicating sooner.

While Lee said the district worked “with a concerned parent,” Gruber denies this. She said the letter sent to parents was not enough.

“The school principal, assistant superintendent, regional superintendent and state CEO of schools all demonstrated commitment to perpetuate the sexualization of children in their care,” Gruber said in her TikTok.

In a statement to WOAI, the district said it immediately addressed the incident with the teacher after learning about it. The district also said it will conduct further training for teachers “on appropriate and inappropriate activities with children to ensure nothing like this happens again.”
