NASHVILLE — Singer Michelle Branch has filed for divorce from her husband of three years, Patrick Carney of the Black Keys.

Branch, 39, cited irreconcilable differences in the six-page complaint filed in Nashville Friday, less than 24 hours after she was arrested on a misdemeanor domestic assault charge at the couple's home.

According to court documents, "the parties are no longer capable of resuming their marital relationship and living together as husband and wife."

The "Everywhere" singer is seeking primary custody of her and Carney's two children as well as child support. Court papers also show she asked to be named as a beneficiary on Carney’s life insurance.

Branch and Carney, 42, are required to attend a mandated parenting seminar and Branch is seeking an agreed permanent parenting plan from the court as part of the divorce.

USA TODAY has reached out to Branch and Carney's reps for comment.

Branch announced her separation from Carney on Thursday. They share a son, turning 4 this month, and 6-month-old daughter.

"To say that I am totally devastated doesn't even come close to describing how I feel for myself and for my family. The rug has been completely pulled from underneath me and now I must figure out how to move forward," Branch wrote in a statement released to USA TODAY Thursday. "With such small children, I ask for privacy and kindness."
