Michelle And Barack Obama Share Heartfelt Tributes On Sasha's 20th Birthday

To commemorate the turn of their daughter's second decade, Barack and Michelle Obama took to social media this morning to share nostalgic photos of their youngest, Sasha Obama, alongside heartfelt messages.

"Happy birthday, Sasha!" the former president wrote on Twitter. "You've grown so much, and it's been a joy to watch you become the person we always hoped you'd be. Your mom and I can't wait to see where life takes you next."

"Happy birthday to my darling Sasha!" the former First Lady wrote via Instagram. "I am so grateful for every laugh we've shared—and everything you've taught me over the years. You'll always be my little girl, but I couldn't be prouder of the woman you are becoming. Love you so much! 🎉🥳"

Sasha's kickoff into her 20s serves as a significant milestone for the Obamas. "I almost forgot that this year, this summer, they're going to be 23 and 20," Michelle previously said on CBS This Morning. "I mean, I'm just like, 'Stop there.' I don't even have teenagers anymore. So I am excited for her next chapter. That's why I want to be as excited as every parent."

Michelle also shared in the interview her mixed feelings on watching her daughters grow up, particularly the bittersweet excitement she feels over Malia Obama's independence post-graduation, given particular potential risks on her safety. "I don't want to have to worry about [Malia] entering a world where she has to worry about how people would treat her because of the color of her skin," she said. "I am excited, but I'd like to be more excited," Obama added, "to know that as she goes out and gets her first apartment and rides the subway somewhere, that they don't make assumptions about her based on the color of her skin. That she's not at risk, out there in the world as an adult, because she's a Black woman."

Barack and Michelle have nonetheless both been extremely proud of their daughters. "I didn't have to give them a lot of advice because they had a very clear sense of what was right and what was wrong and [of] their own agency and the power of their voice," the former president shared.

In an interview with James Corden on The Late Late Show, he also said, "I could not be prouder of them, not just because they're smart and accomplished, but they're just kind people."

Sasha is currently a rising junior at the University of Michigan.
